Title: rear wheel rotation Post by Chieftain on Jan 23rd, 2008, 3:14pm With rear wheels jacked up should they both move when turned by hand, if so as it has TC fitted should it be the same direction or as with normal diff one forward and one back? ;D Car is P reg Cosworth. Also what size Allan key/torx for the diff filler? |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Matt on Jan 23rd, 2008, 6:04pm one should turn clockwise and the other anti clockwise, unless its turned from the prop, then either one or both wheels will turn in the same direction |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Chieftain on Jan 23rd, 2008, 6:09pm Matt thats what i thought but have been told that with the tc fitted only one will move unless you turn very hard and fast ??? |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Matt on Jan 23rd, 2008, 6:48pm the tc is electronic, so unless you have the car in gear and running it shouldn't make any difference |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Chieftain on Jan 23rd, 2008, 9:33pm right then turning it by hand the opposite side just twitches then no movement, had a fitter ride in the car last week to check the noise and first thing he said was DIFF. you can understand why I want to be sure as it is a pig of a job to do, so all advice welcome. ;D |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Matt on Jan 23rd, 2008, 9:38pm its not as hard as you think, the drive shafts can be unbolted from the hub on the diff, its only held to the subframe by a couple of bolts if i remember correctly.. |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Chieftain on Jan 23rd, 2008, 10:05pm Yes you are right its all the cagage around it and lowering it to the floor. If you are right it seems that I will be attempting it soon. BTW do you happpen to know the size alllen/torx that fits the drain plug on the diff.? Thanks for advice so far. |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Highlander on Jan 23rd, 2008, 11:15pm Think its T30 or 35 from memory |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Chieftain on Jan 24th, 2008, 3:28pm Just tried a 3/8 allan key that is just to small, mind you dont think the plug has been out since the diff was built :( |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by TiberiuS on Jan 24th, 2008, 4:06pm Torx and allen keys are two different things, you'll need a proper torx bit for it. I think you're confused with an LSD, the diff on the standard 24v is just a normal, non locking type. |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Chieftain on Jan 24th, 2008, 5:01pm Hi Tiberius, thanks for input, but still none the wiser as to what should happen with both wheels off the ground. I know big difference between the keys, orginally thought it was torx but having cleaned it is is a hex tried 3/8 which seemed snug fit but it is solid, will bathe it in penetrating oil and try again, would be nice to know if thre is any oil at all :o before going down the change diff route. All input welcome. |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by TiberiuS on Jan 24th, 2008, 5:37pm Hi. The diff is working right, with both wheels off of the ground, when you move one, the other one should move in the opposite direction because the driveshaft output is effectively locked. Now if you lower the 'other' wheel to the ground and then turn your wheel again, providing the car isn't in park and you have big muscles (;D), you'll then be turning the gearbox/engine ;) You can get torx style allen keys, I have a set and there's nothing like giving one a good whack with a hammer to remove stubborn bolts liuke the ones holding the rear bumper ::) Regards, Bruce. |

Title: Re: rear wheel rotation Post by Chieftain on Jan 24th, 2008, 6:04pm Hi Bruce Thanks for reply again, from what you say about movement it seems that I DO have a problem, i.e when I rotate one wheel (with both off the ground) nothing happens to the other one except maybe a twitch to me that means it is goosed ??? but happy to be proved wrong :o |
