Title: Windscreen
Post by eaglestrike on Jan 26th, 2008, 6:28pm
Hi I have a scorp cosworth and on Christmas eve I noticed that the front screen had a crack in it. Just after Christmas I got a new screen fitted and in under four weeks the new screen has cracked in the same place as the last one. The cracks have both been at the bottom edge of the drivers side, where the wires for the heated screen come out? I took it back to autoglass who say they will look at it but they will not cover the screen on warrenty because it has gone in the same place. Do you know of a reason why the screens have cracked. Any Help would be great

Thank you   ??? ???

Yep, corrosion

A slight rusting can and will put pressure on the screen and it will crack either with the cold or by vibration although they usually are pretty good at spotting it and should warn you when they fit it.

IIRC when my replacement screen was fitted there were two pieces of rubber located at the very base of the screen so the screen actually 'sat' on them before it was fixed in place.

I have been told in the past that on some cars   the windscreen  and rear  screen  are   integral  parts  of  the vehicle's  structure and,  as such,   have  forces  acting  on them  when the  chassis is  under stress.

I have my doubts,  as  plastic  is  hardly  as  strong  a  material  as steel whether  in  compression  or  tension.

 But  you never know. ???
