Title: Egr and Inlet Manifold 2.3 scorpio estate
Post by workshopboy on Jan 27th, 2008, 4:39pm
Hi all
Firstly i would like to say hi as i have just joined.
Secondly can i ask for some help with a 2.3 scorpio estate i have just purchased. The plastic inlet manifold has totally melted internally due to hot exhaust gas from the EGR valve. This has caused the ICV valve to have a totally open passage from the throttle body causing an idle speed of 3000 rpm. I have checked the EGR valve and strangely appears to be working as it should. I have trawled the breakers and have found a manifold which i will fit in the next couple of days. But until it runs correctly i won't be able th check the live data from the ecu to see if there is something else hiding in the wings. Could i have some pointers please to check for other nasties waiting for me that might have an impact on this problem please?
Andy

hi welcome,i bought a car with the same fault 2 years ago i found the cause of the inlet melting was that the cat had failed blocking exhaust and sending hot gases through egr, found 2hand cat fitted that had no problems since.

Hi. The inlet manifold is a common fault on the 2.3, some members have changed it for the 2.0 manifold which fits with some slight modification and doesn't have this problem. I believe Matt is one member who has done this mod, he posted some details about it a while back.

Good luck and welcome :)

Regards, Bruce.

hi there

while it's all in bits, give everything a clean.

clean all bits with carb/brake cleaner.

clean the MAF, idle bypass valve (remember to give it a drop or two of light oil afterwards on the push rod) and the throttle body.

also check all the wiring to the coilpacks, etc.

Hi
Thank you. Have looked a wiring tonight around the coolant sensor etc and its starting to fall apart as i move it so thats the next job then. The other old manifold is in the boot and that one has melted worse than this one, and there is and ICV in there too along with a coil pack. Oh my god what have i bought!!!!!

sounds like someone fixed the problem but not the cause before you got it just like mine, the  1 i got broke down in scotland,AA man said inlet problem, local garage fitted new 1 (£400) and it broke down on way home to norfolk within a week of fitting,it was then taken to fmd who checked it out and told owner the cat had collapsed and melted the inlet manifold so £1000 to fix was the death toll for him.
