Title: REV Counter Stopped Working
Post by hughiemc on Jan 29th, 2008, 5:46pm
Hi all, after fitting a new (2nd hand) alternator i just took my 12v Ultima for a spin and noticed the rev counter was a bit 'twitchy' then it stopped working all together. Anyone got any ideas?

cheers

When I first got mine the rev counter was twitchy.

It was repaired on warranty but I think it was the alternator bushes or diodes.

Hopefully someone more knowlegable will be along to help shortly.

The rev counter works from the alternator  :)

If it was fine before, then you'd have to assume that the second hand alternator is faulty  :)

Rev counter on the 12 v takes the pulse from the coil AFAIK.

Well as far as I know it does but look to the wiring diagrams for confirmation ..... ! WIRING (http://www.carsoft.ru/avtorepair/sierra/incl.pdf)

What ?...the rev counter on the 12V works from the coil & not the alternator  ???

Surely then, if the rev counter doesn't work, then the coil must be kaput....& if the coil is kaput, then the ignition can't work properly & the engine wouldn't be running very well  :)

Please correct me if I'm wrong  ;)

NO JC it does not work as simply as that !

The coil can be OK but the pulses are the thing that matters and if the pulse counter fails then the rev counter fails...
ECU any way  so its most likely the pulse counter has failed .

Newer cars do take the pulses from the alternator, BUT AFAIK the old 12 still uses the coil as the source of the pulse.

The 2.5 TD uses the alternator for the rev counter as it doesn't have spark plugs / coils  ;)

Hi all sorry for the TARDY reply, the single wire had popped off the alternator where the rev counter gets its feed from. I was going to sell her once repaired but I realised she is too nice to let go lol.

hi , thanks for the tremendous intrest and support from this site, all the answers and questions, i have sorted my rev counter out, on the 12v the rev counter is supplied from the alterater by the black and white, or white and black cable , it runs under the engine and up to a multiplug near the battery and this plugwas corroded, cleaned it and he presto working counter. it is only the stimulation from all the people on this site that makes it work, right or wrong it just makes you look for the answers witch in the cold light of day are always there , thanks ricky

It's also worth soaking any connectors in switch cleaner and working them a few times, then packing them full of electrical grease like the stuff you can get from Maplin, it's an extra insurance against water getting in and leaving you stranded on the side of the M11 in the pouring rain :). I do this on all my cars and even my trusty 13 year old Mondeo which gets used in all weather still seems free of any electrical problems (touches wood).

Glad you sorted it ;)
