Timing chain tensioner on the way out ?  :-/

they all rattle, ford fitted cheap timing chain tensioner to the car which drain of oil over night, the rattle should last more then 2 to 3 seconds and dont rev the car while its rattling, updated versions of the tensioner are available but its a big job for nothing unless the rattle gets worse.

when you say not as quick, do you mean off the mark? the v6's are compared to the 16v, but should pick up very quickly once moving

They dont ALL rattle, I have two that dont ;) although a few do especially if they havent had regular oil changes

Try cranking the engine for a few seconds with the throttle fully depressed (Wide Open Throttle) the engine SHOULD NOT start when the throttle is fully depressed if everything is working as it should but be prepared just in case it does.

This should circulate the oil round the engine without rattling your chains ;)

I actually reckon my 2.3 Estate is quicker off the mark than a 24v too up until maybe 40mph when the difference starts to show

Are the spark plugs in good nick and correct for the car? Check for air leaks. There are air pipes that go to a canister at the drivers side front of the engine bay. These pipes popped off on mine and made it very sluggish - but you would hear the problem there I think as well as feel it.

Has it been serviced recently? Whats the mileage?

PS Not sure my rattle has got appreciably worse in 3 years *touch wood*
