i have a 96 2ltre  ultima which suddenly increases revs while cruising steadily at 70 or 80 . any ideas

Could be the torque converter not locking up properly ?  :-/

my rev counter sometimes flickers, but the actual revs dont change. a week or so ago it was doing it constantly, in fact it looked as if it was doing it in time to the music, looked more like a db meter than a rev counter  ;D

Is the engine getting up to temperature? I think I've read that the torque converter won't lock below a certain temp.

Have you cleaned the MAF lately, see here:
