Title: what now........

really am getting sick of these cars, no wonder ford have the nickname 'dagenham dustbin', the build quality is sooooo poor.

right, the other month i had the offside rear wheel bearings done (again), now its making a horrendous noise from what seems to be the front nearside but only when the steering is engaged. it doesnt do it all the time, there is no noticeable difference in the drive or steering, it sounds like a spring being wound up too tight then 'bang' as it lets go, you can also feel it through the car. i've raised the car and checked the wheels for freeplay (i.e. bearings) and they're fine. i also visually checked the coil for breakage (as ford make them from an alien form of alloy that isnt strong enough to  be used on a tonka toy and therefore snap as easily as a rich tea biscuit) but it looks fine. the steering rack was brand new 18 months ago, anyone got any ideas? before i sling the piece of s**t off beachy head and make a dubious insurance claim..........hold on, beachy head? thats 60 or more miles away......it'll never make that.

Have you checked that the wishbone balljoint & track rod end are swiveling smoothly ?....could be that a rubber boot has split & the ball joint may be seizing  :-/....... :)

is it just at low speed? if so, i would suspect the abs kicking in. my flatmates saxo does exactly this, at low speed, when steering not straight. he spent LOTS trying to get it fixed, new hub etc etc, but nothing worked, he just lives with it. check abs sensors?

ps, if the nearside is going Pttangg, the theory is the offside sensor is kaput (ie registering zero, so nearside brake is applied), usually due to sensor being worn, and gap too big when steering under stress, if that makes sense.

thats interesting, but wouldnt the abs light come on?

From your description. it sounds as if it could be a broken coil spring on the front suspension. They often break (when they do break), close to an end and it can be quite difficult to spot that they have broken.

thats what it sounds like harry, but thinking about it, it would only happen the once, then the loose spring would rattle over any bump (as did the offside one when that was broken  ::))

hi there

it might be the ball bearing race at the top of the strut.

stray some wd40 in using the straw.

his doesnt, seems like a common problem on tinternet, no abs light but abs engaging. im not saying yours is this, but its worth checking if yours does it under light braking at low speeds, especially if during steering. its likely gap between sensor and "receiver" is extending, so signal lost and abs kicks in. signal is weakest at low speeds.

ps he didnt have this problem until garage did both driveshafts, then had to have bearing, hub flange, hub, ball joints, nothing cured it so he gave up. i suggested they should be looking on the opposite side, but they ignored me  ;) my theory is dirt between hub and flange.

some more clues on this one;.............

had to go shopping today so thought i'd try the car, only seems to do it at low speed but does it when im not using the brake, it will do it in either direction the wheel is turned but, interestingly, after it goes ppppttttttang, whatever direction im turning the wheel the car will pull in that direction.... ???

could it be the spring not quite seating correctly? i had this on my granada with no apparent probs just an occasional twang, worth looking at though.

...."whatever direction im turning the wheel the car will pull in that direction....  "

Do you mean the steering stays in that position & doesn't centralise when coming out of the turn ?

If so, as Andrew suggested, it could be the bearing ring seized at the top of the strut  :-/

HTH  :)

tali, hope its either the spring seat or the top strut bearings(just done these on mine, top strut bearing £6.04 each, and top strut mounting £13.59 each, both plus vat, very reasonable. plus fitting)

Did you notice a creaking or stiffness when turning the steering wheel recently, before this problem happened ?....also a knocking from this area ?

Maybe the rubber strut mount is caput as well as the bearing ring ?  :-/

I would have thought that it it was a spring that it would always be biased to turn towards he side of the fault when induced by a turn. My wife had a spring break and did not realize.  drove it for months until I noticed it was slightly lower on one side, had a drive to test it and drove perfectly just a little solid feeling on bumps....never knew what caused it.
The thought of the steering going or slipping out of track ie.track rod end slipping along it's thread when under pressure when turned at slow speed or simlar, this I would have thought may caused the steering bias to be present after a turn..the thing that shoots this idea down is why or is the bias/ track the same direction after parking and then setting off again. The same would apply to the spring problem.
In other words does the same bias remain when starting from a parked position e.g problem left bias steering..park up...set off still left bias steering...or does it always drive normal even after stopping with the problem ???

Could do with some one to crawl under the car and look while you swing the steering after the fault shows.....better still strap him under the car then they will see it in real time  ;D

Good luck and very interesting for the readers.....

John

ITS THE BEARINGS ON THE TOP OF THE STRUTS THAT ARE CAUSING YOUR PROBLEM.

Yea....FMD  ;D

About £6.50 for the bearing ring & £16.00 for the top mounting bush  :)
