Title: 2.3 auto transmission
Post by stevie on Feb 13th, 2008, 10:38pm
hi everyone new to the scorpio however love the car thing is my transmission (auto) is fine when cold runs through all the gears perfectly smooth and quiet however as the auto heats up (and the fluid gets hot ) it starts to behave oddly turbine whine at first then it goes quiet and runs as normal . it feels as if the box is starved of fluid i am having the fluid and filter changed this week ,i have cleaned the maf have checked the fluid it is just off pink does not smell burnt it smells mineraly i spoke to a mechanic and he said the fluid and the filter needs changing as the pump is trying to pump thinned fluid when its hot i,m assuming he is right any advice would be great cheers    this site is exellent also fixed my key fob remote and reprogrammed it with the help of this site exellent indeed will be donating keep up  the good work

Let them know that chances are if it's not had a new filter before the filter bolt will need shortening otherwise the filter won't seat properly.

oh ok cheers dont know if its had a new filter before only had the car 1 month but cheers i,ll tell them thanks a lot , do you know if the fluid after time loses its functionallity and if the filter is full of gunge would cause fluid starvation in the auto box ?

The turbine whine does sound like a filter change is needed.
Most people report an improvement after changing the fluid.
The fluid in mine looked brown on the dipstick but was black when drained & loads of sludge in the sump.
It significantly reduced the time it took to engage gear from neutral - especially reverse.
See details of oil change here:

I don't think it's necessary to disconnect the battery after cleaning the MAF, but a reset may be worthwhile if you haven’t done it before - make sure you have the radio code.

Hi there

I have exactly the same problem

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=display;num=1201881728

when the oil / box is cool all it's wonderful, the shifts are silk smooth, no whining or turbine noise. After a good warm-up (HOT) it start acting weird and has a lot of slippage. I took a oil sample out of the dipstick and compared it whit new fluid. The old one has colored and has the constancy of water. In this weekend i will do the change. Fingers corssed    :)

Yes i have cleaned the MAF, but it was already clean, disconnected the battery and still no change. The problem is the overheating, ATF oil is very sensitive and for every 20 C increase in temperature it's life halfens. Have you ever seen a diesel Scorpio ? It has 2 oil coolers and a high power electric fan. Our 2.3 and 2.9 has an oil to water cooler (mearly a pipe) through the main (engine) radiator and a small oil to air radiator behind the front bumper.

no i aint never seen a diesel scorpio did'nt know there was one to be honest new to scorpios just bought it cos me discovery is off the road at the min but am selling the disco to keep the scorpio its obviously the better car newer too ....... anyway is there anything else we can do to improve the cooling for the box or will the mew fluid cope with the high temp,s hope the change rectifies the slipping as i just love driving the scorpio never had a car so comfortable apart from my old wolsley 1300 auto .. i,v looked for the small radiator behind the front bumper cant seem to find it i assume its there ,took me 2 weeks to locate the dip stick for the box then it appeared was'nt looking hard enough thought it would be yellow like the main dip stick never mind i got there in the end .... cheers  will let you know how thing go with the fluid change

Hello

I did the oil change, well...sort of. Knowing that my cossie had a filter change not so long ago, i have put o hose through the dipstick hole and managed to pump 2.5 liters of oil out. Then i have added 2.5 liters of fresh new ATF Dexron III / Mercon oil and took the car for a ride through the neighborhood to warm the box up and mix the oil. Then i have repeated the procedure again, took another 2.5 liters out and added 2.5 new oil (to increase the concentration). The results are amazing !!!  No thumps or delays when selecting D or R, the box shifts smoother than silk (you must be very concentrated to feel it changing). I gave it a slight trashing (few kickdowns, some wheel spin etc.), now it works great, no slippage. Also i have to mention that before this the engine braking (2,1 on the selector) didn't work properly, now it does and it's beautiful. The old oil is black as tarmac (but still smells mineral). In the following weekend i'll do another 2 changes to further increase the concentration of new / clean oil.

As for cooling look at this:

Its a MASS AIFLOW METER situated on the air intake .... Read all about it HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cleanmaf.htm) and associated links ... search on the index page on the main web pages for MAF
