As long as you fit the correct wattage bulbs (55w) of the correct fitment (H1),theres no reason why you cant fit uprated bulbs.I have recently upgraded to Osram Night Breaker bulbs in both dipped & main beams & they make a HUGE difference over standard.However the price of good quality HID conversions are coming down & represent good value for money.Whichever route you choose,it should be an improvement over standard  :)

I'm guessing the stalk would have burnt through if the bulbs were 100w ( illegal for on-road use anyway ).
I put some cheap 55w 4500k blue tint H1 bulbs in my Scorpio which gave a significant improvement over the standard bulbs - much brighter / whiter. Got them off ebay for about 10 or 15 quid including the main, dip, sidelight & foglight bulbs which I thought was pretty good.
I still may go the HID route though.

HID are the very bright lights which dazzle you on some of the more modern cars. The than filament bulbs, HID use a high voltage discharge lamp, which uses an electronic ballast to generate the voltage.

The price for a pair of such HID conversion lamp kits H1 (to cover both dips or both mains) has dropped to about £45 on ebay.

HID = High Intensity Discharge

For your info, I put Phillips 50% brighter H1 bulbs in my Scorpio, road legal for mots etc, and do throw out more light than the standard bulbs, and look more visible to others. They are not blue tint, they have a higher Kelvin rating,  something like 4500k is standard, 7000k makes the light more...erm....daylight and HID colours. Not dull yellowy or dim.
I saw some on ebay now that have yellow orange hints for fog and rain use. Could be useful to put in fog lights.

There is a later version of the same xenom filled bulb with an even higher output on the market.
