hi, if a 2300 scorpio auto gearbox needs car to be running on a cold morning for 10 minutes before it will move in 'D' drive does this mean the box is no good.?. once warm the box changes gear lovely??? thanks all. :-*

hi there

eh, yes!! :-/

the gearbox should work within a second or two, cold or hot.

check the usual things like fluid level, colour, etc.

might just need a full fliud change. :-/

Sounds to me like low fluid or clogged filter  ???
Also check the MAF is clean.

My old Granada Scorpio 2.9 suddenly started taking a long time to engage gears - found a small leak on the pipes to the oil cooler - something to check for.
The gearbox fluid is in a sealed system so should not normally 'use' any - check for leaks.

Sounds like the filter is blocked and the ATF is unable to be pumped around until it has warmed up , worth checking the condition of the fluid and its dirty then MAYBE a fluid filter change will assit but does NOT sound good .

If its ok when HOT the that may be a solution . just changing filter and ATF.

Low level fluid also does this. The ATF expands very much when warm. In 10 minutes the oil warms up and expands so, the pump gets going.

To check the correct level the car must be run, engine temp up to normal, the selector should be put 2-3 times in every position, then in P and with the engine running the level on the dipstick should be somewhere between min and max. A very hot box / engine should never go over MAX.
