My 1995 scorpio,after running to warm up the idle speed sticks at about 2000revs.The cables and external carb linkages are all as they should be,Cables slack and linkages appear to be closed,what do I check next

Traction control? If it has...check the TC Unit for correct return to normal position and also correct cable installation in the TCU

Check the intake plumbing for leaks, some unmetered air getting in somewhere would make the idle race. Maybe also the throttle position sensor could be a culprit?

What engine is it?

Thanks for the info,I forgot to mention that its an Ultima 2.9, So no traction control.

Must be a 12V ....as the 24V has traction

Is there any air bypass control on the 12v? I know nothing whatsoever about the 12v but my money's still on some unmetered air leaking into the intake somewhere.

It has to be the Idle air control valve if there are no leaks ....

Perhaps THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iacvdata.htm) will help. The unit sits on top of the throttle. If you also look at THIS page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/12vlooms.htm) you will see that the IACV is connected via the large connector 2513 which is usually located on the offside inner wing below the power steering reservoir. Try opening the connector up and cleaning the pins inside as corrosion can occur. An IACV is about £80 but cleaning is sometimes successful. You will need to remove the unit and clean with carb cleaner and then apply 3in1 oil to the shaft, This sometimes works but you need to ensure that the gasket is sound or replaced or you will get an air leak. :)

Lift the bonnet and look from the front towards the rear, just over the top of the radiator is the idle control valve bolted on with two bolts and with a two pin electrical plug. It is probably the easiest item on the entire 12v engine to get at and remove. Don't worry about the gasket, any thin single layer card will do to make a gasket from. Cornflake packet is fine, but eat the conrflakes first ;D

Just plonk the IACV on the card, burn holes through for the bolts with a hot soldering iron, put the bolts through to keep it aligned, then use a small hammer gently to mark the inner and outer edges to cut with scissors.

Another possibility is that the throttle position sensor has gone faulty. This is mounted on the end of the throttle butterfly shaft. All it is - is a potententiometer (just like a volume control on an old style radio) otherwise known as a variable resistance. Two terminals, one for each end and a third for the output - it produces a variable voltage dependant on the how far down you press the throttle, so the engine management system knows what you are doing with your right foot.

Fault codes should be generated if the EEC IV 'engine running' diagnostics are run and there might be stored fault codes - should it be faulty.
