hi,im new to this site having purchased a 24v scorpio ultima within the past year.recently i have encountered a few electrical gremlins!!i.e. o/d light flashing,not changing into higher gear,and temp gauge not working correctly.after looking at info on this site would i be correct in assuming its a problem with the gearbox loom?im not mechanically minded and need all the help i can get.if it is the loom is it prohibatively expensive??i do beleive ford do not stock or manufacture these looms anymore ,does anyone know if this is correct.the model i have is the S REG 24V ULTIMA.THANKS FOR ANYONES HELP.

budgie.
You could well be right in your assumption.The loom can always be repaired and it's not the end of the road.Without doubt the 24v boys will soon be along to pinpoint your problem.Keep smilin'nothings insurmountable!

hi budgie

sadly you are correct in saying the loom is no longer available. the gearbox loom is part of the engine loom and if its in a fragile state

has is had a new or serviced gear box in the past or any major engine work? the gearbox loom is part of the engine loom and if its in a fragile state just moving it can cause real problems. The wiring plug on the gear box is a right pain to reconnect if its been disconnected with the box in situe

also does the radio, instrument dials behave oddly? may just be a faulty VSS sensor

late dated ones had better wiring than the early cars,had 96/7 one with rotten wiring ,now got june 98 one with loverly wiring

thanks all for your help,as far as i know no major engine work apart from me getting a new radiator fitted last june for 500 pounds at my local ford dealer.all the instruments apart from the temp gauge work fine .ive just purchased a gearbox loom on ebay,supposedly in perfect working order.i thought it would be a good idea to get it if ford dont hold them anymore.i may be in luck and it will be exactly what i need.

budgie.
Good lad,keep forgin on,but try and keep away from Mr Ford,he will see you off,as he has on your rad.Sometimes,at the moment we need to go to him for parts,but even fast moving items are becoming obsolete as the grinning parts man is only too keen to tell you! As I tell the parts man(though he has'nt the slightest interest)
"we dont need parts for new cars,which you have in great abundance,when we start needing them you say they are obsolete" The grinning stops and the shoulders are shrugged,keep takin your wages parts man !

hi does anyone know of a good autoeletrician in the norwich area who could try to sort my loom problems on my scorpio.looks like it best not to go to mr ford man!i am expecting a four figure sum to fix it although 2000 pounds has been mentioned by the ford people who have my car at the moment!!!!seems a lot doesnt it?

Hi Budgie :). Your symptoms make me think of two possible causes. A dirty MAF which you can easily clean by removing it from it's position on the side of the air filter and giving it a good clean with electric contact cleaner or brake cleaner. Don't rub or scrub anything, just give it a good squirt and let it dry. Disconnect the Bty whilst doing this job.

The second thing is the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) may be faulty.
Before you start this next job disconnect the Bty completely. This will clear all faults logged on the computer. It will also mean that for a day or two the car may behave oddly - tendency to stall and lumpy gearchanges but don't let this put you off as it is normal behaviour as the car has to ,"reset" itself after the Bty has been disconnected for about an hour. If it is you will get all sorts problems with the gearchanges, speedo and rev. counters telling lies etc. The only sure ways of checking the VSS is to swap it for one which is good, for that to happen you need to have a friendly, helpfull Scorpy owner nearby. Or replace it with a new one, about 60squiddies, from FordpartsUk. The fitting of a new VSS is quite simple. It is situated on the thin end of the Autobox near the rear of the car, passenger side. Undo the apropriate Heat shield and slide it out of the way for access to the VSS, unplug the wiring from the VSS, unbolt the securing bolt and ease the VSS out of its housing, fit the new VSS, reconnect the wiring plug, replace the Heatshield. Job done

I can't say anything about the Temp guage except to say that it is not, as far as I know, connected to the gearbox loom and this has been dealt with elsewhere on this site.

hi its me again,thanks for your suggestions.im offshore until next tuesday so i cant do much until then but on reading some of the messages on this website i noticed that loom problems would cause a lumpy gear change,well i dont have this problem with mine.it just doesnt go above 3rd.so hopefully it will be the maf(excuse my ignorance but i havnt a clue what that is!!)or the vss.as soon as im home i will take it to an autoelectrician.again thanks,

hi,just had my car picked up from local ford dealer.apparantely the wiring loom at the front near the radiator are all brittle and corroded!!!!needs to be chased back to see how far the problem goes then replaced with new.no idea how long this would take and at 50 pounds an hour i think it best to try to find someone with some time on their hands who could do it.again thanks for everyones help and sorry for my ignorance on all things mechanical.although its causing me a few financial headaches and ive had a few granadas in my time which have been no problem at all i like this cossie and i will do my utmost to get it running again!!!!!

One of our local auto electricians repaired an engine loom in a 12v limousine for a friend of mine for £500,he made a very sound job of it too,but he is 80 miles from you!

good morning GOZZ,i would happily pay 500 pounds ,even double that if i can be assured it would sort out all the problems.i can drive my car but obviously at slow speed.if need be im sure i could find it possible to get wherever you are.my father is taking it to an autoelectrician in norwich today so i will see what is said there.ford man has basically told me its not worth doing because of the price he was quoting.engine has to come out!!gearbox has to come out !!so on and soforth.i will keep you informed if you dont mind .cheers.
