Title: driveshaft uj joint.
Post by dianet on Mar 26th, 2008, 10:46am
Hi,
I am renewing uj joint.Just a query about something in the workshop instructions. When tightening the bolts what does the 21-540 and the 45 degrees mean?
                      Thanks
                        Diane.

If you mean what it says here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/rearaxle/RAxleDriveshaft.pdf

I don't know what 21-540 means,

Here:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/rearaxle/RAxleSpecs.pdf

It gives 3 stages to tighten bolts to stages 1 then 2 then a further number of degrees rotation of the spanner, torque depends whether 8mm or 10mm.

Tighten each stage in bolt order something like 1,4,2,5,3,6

I think 21-540 refers to the Ford tool number.

I've done the CV joints on a Mk2 Granada which are pretty much the same and only ever did them up by hand with an allen key as tight as I could get them - nothing ever came undone.
Think I just cleaned the threads up and used thread lock compound.
Scorpio uses TORX head bolts instead of HEX head bolts.

Getting the ruddy things undone is the main problem! As mike says just do em up tight in stages, they dont come undone, the instructions sound unnecessarily technical, rather like opening and eating a can of beans as may be outlined by law in the future for the uninitiated !!
