Title: Thermostat on a Cosworth
Post by catalina on Apr 2nd, 2008, 10:33am
Has anyone changed the main cooling water thermostat on a Cosworth?
The manual makes it sound like a 1 hour job but I can't even begin to understand where to start.

It seems necessary to dismantle the whole of the air inlet manifold system before you can get near the thermostat housing. The prospect of doing this and then trying to re-assemble it seems completely unreasonable.

Am I missing something? Can anyone help me please ???

John

It is a bit of a fiddle, you will need air filter & trunking off, though cant remember if you need belts & tensioner off, just had look at engine in w/shop, belts off & tensioner off , AC compressor off for access to stat, carefull with hosees, particular one to w/pump, they get cut by the spring clips very easy, replace with worm clips if poss, make sure they are in the right pos to allow build up with out fouling tensioner or AC bkt. the OE spring clips can be a right b***er even with right tool.

Did you manage it John? I did it not so long ago, not a pleasant job but could have been worse. Ish  ;D

Just in case you see this. Took the car and a new thermostst into the garage today, 20th May, for fitting.

Found out that the part supplied(6588962) was wrong. Am now told that it needs part No. 7334678, but that this is no longer available from Ford. Do you know the part No. of the unit you fitted? If it was 7334678, where did yiu get it from please?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers   John

This article (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/replacestat.htm) may help with the fitting if you can get one.
Try THIS site (http://www.fordpartsuk.com/contactus.htm) for the part. Trevor is well used to Scorpio owners needs and is first class.

Yes, I had seen this and that's why I decided to leave it to the local(very good) workshop to do the job. Even so, if I hadn't shown them the article I suspect that they would have started to dismantle the front of the engine. Pity I can't find the correct item though!

Thanks everyone for your help. I have ordered a new item from Trevor at Foray Motor Group. Hope it turns out to be correct when it arrives. If not, I hope I can still take up the offer of the item at Bridgnorth

Part number is correct as Baz says and it is still available from Ford, via Germany (approx. 5 working days).
Well, it as of tonight as I've received no phone call to the contra`.  ;)

£53.19 + vat

Thanks guys. Am just waiting to see what arrives from the Trevor character. My local Ford agents could give me no idea how long it would take to get the part from Germany. I offered to pay postage but this was not acceptable.
