Title: Auto gearbox on 2.0 96'
Post by Slipknot on Apr 2nd, 2008, 12:57pm
Hi there!
I have question!

My autobox works fine, but gear selector sometimes move badly... i mean, that i need to add some more effort to change the shift.
Like yesterday i changed it into to drive, but i thought that i was rising 5 kg thing! :o  and i couldn't changed it to 1st gear... reached 1st, but won't hold it.

Strange, really strange! this morning were seems to be ok!  ???

Any ideas on this 1??? Sorry for my english if it's bad :-/

I would suggest you don’t use it if possible until you’ve got underneath and lubricated the pivots etc for the linkage.
I can’t give you any details, but there have been posts about a bracket or something breaking after the linkage becoming stiff.
Often happens if the car has stood for a long time.
I think it was Highlander posted about it, I’ll see if I can track down the post.

I think it's item 2 in the first picture here:

I expect someone else will be along with firsthand knowledge.

Yes I,m sure you're right Highlander supplied one not long ago but I can't find the post.

The braket is just slipping round I believe, time for a replacement I'm afraid....

so if i understood you correctly, this means i need to replace or grease this bracket (lever)?
Gearbox if fine and only this thing that is causing the trouble??? Is gearbox will fine and this won't affect it with damage?

btw thanks guys for the help!

Well not had it happen to me, and may be something else, but from what I’ve read, get some grease on it & you may be OK. Leave it & it’ll probably break.

If it breaks, it's external so not the end of the world, but may be awkward to get at.
