Title: 2.9 12v Tickover ??
Post by adzst24 on Apr 17th, 2008, 7:55pm
Hi all Yep another niggley problem.
The car runs fine tickover is not lumpy (but it does hang on to the revs for ashort time when blipped).
But the main thing is once in a while the revs will drop to about 600 rpm and then back up or some times it drops and then stalls (this can be in gear or not ?)
but never when on the move ???
could this still be caused by the IACV??
Thanks for any help in advance :)

IACV - It certainly can be, but the symptoms are not a perfect match for it. I would be inclined to perhaps look for an air leak around the intake or vacuum pipes. The hanging onto revs might be a sticky throttle or butterfly valve etc..

More typical of the IACV is a reluctance to tickover when cold without some help from the right foot and likely the IACV problem would show up in the diagnostics. Mine did and a few weeks ago it progressed to the stage of occaisionally stalling when cold. I pulled it off, gave it a good spary of carburreter cleaner then when the black stopped flowing out dried it and gave it a spray inside with 3 in 1 oil. That seems to have cured my problem and it only takes a few minutes.

It is the unit right in front of you, at the top of the engine after you lift the bonnet - fixed to the manifold with two bolts. Undo them give it a tap with a mallet and it should come off. Unplug the two pin connector and give it a clean. Likely it will not even need a gasket, but if it does one made from Cornflake packet will be fine for this.
