Title: transmission specialist
Post by stevie on Apr 21st, 2008, 9:05pm
hi fellas does anyone know of a good auto box specialist in the north east area as iv posted earlier i seem to have a problem with my gear box although the speedo is steady some one who is a mechanic i know reckons that the vss is at fault  i cleaned the maf and had the atf and filter changed and all seemed well then on sat as i drove on the motorway the temp gauge dropped to the blue segment yet in town it was normal and that seemed to cooinside with the auto box developing gremlins droping out of 1st into second as i pulled up to a stop  once home and it had cooled down the box was fine again the fluid is red and smells mineraly not burned i am tempted to top up the atf as the guy who did the change said he only put just over 5 litres in when indeed it takes 10.3 litres i topped up with another 2 litres but cant seem to get a propper reading on the dip stick have checked the level engine running and up to temp but the dip stick only shows aa damp covering with no definate guide as to the level ......... a bit long winded i know but wanted to describe every thing  cheers fellas

The gearbox wouldn't cause the temperature gauge to plummet, however it is electronically controlled so if it suddenly thought the engine was cold then it would affect gear changes, etc.

The auto box sump usually holds about 2 litres or so of ATF, but the torque converter itself can contain several litres, plus whatever is in the fluid lines and cooler(s).  Usually when you drain the gearbox you're just getting out the few litres in the sump, not all of it.  Obviously don't overfill the sump as that can cause problems in operation or fluid leaks.

From memory, the procedure for checking the ATF level is to take the car for a run then on your return, stop the car (with the engine still running) and shift into each gear position from Park to 1 and back, holding it in each for a few seconds.  Then check the level immediately whilst in Park and engine still running.  Basically the fluid shouldn't fall below a certain level at any time, hence checking it after putting it into all the gears, whilst the valve block and servos are still relatively full.  If it doesn't go to the mark on the dipstick then top up through the dipstick tube (a funnel makes it a cleaner and easier job).

You could also check for ATF leaks from around the sump mating face, the propshaft end and the torque converter housing (should be a rubber bung on the bottom you can pull out for inspection).  Other possible places to leak are the unions on the pipes leading to the cooler(s), and the cooler(s) themselves, especially the one in the radiator (is the ATF getting into the engine coolant?).

10.3 liters is the overall oil capacity, the box sump holds 3-5 liters, the rest stays in the converter / coolers / cooler lines. Exceeding maximum quantity can have terrible effects.

PS: ATF has a very big dilatation rate. When is cool it even won't pass minimum level on the dipstick. When hot can go well over the maximum.
