Title: Help! Cossie knocks, knocks & KNOCKS!
Post by CossieLover on Apr 22nd, 2008, 8:18pm
I’m a Scorpio 2.9 24V Cosworth owner from The Netherlands! Just discovered
this great website! My Scorpio Cosworth was imported from Germany and I absolutely
adore this car, but ofcourse, it’s a complex car and I already had a few technical
issues allthough nothing serious.

So I kept my beloved ’95 Cossie in top condition, but 3 big problems emerged a few
weeks ago, I don’t know what to do because I’m afraid my Ford dealer will rip
me off since my experiences with them aren’t that good!!!

Traffic lights turning from red to green, gently pressing gas pedal down, but car did
not move at all! Engine revs seemed slightly irregular, released gas to press pedal
down once again. Car like normal again! Pfew! Had this situation several times now,
but really got scared when it happened, but this time with a 1-2 seconds grinding
noise from beneath the car and immediate unresponsiveness to gaspedal! Released
gas pedal to press it down again and car was accelerating normal. To my judgment,
the auto gear box is working perfectly, with a normal and a super clean fluid level.

Test driving last few weeks, this problem seems to have dissapeared, but something
else came instead:

A sometimes very loud and distinctive (rear end) “knock” appears while
driving at somewhat higher speeds. Each time it knocks, engine revs fall slightly too.
Not affected by my driving, this problem leads a life of it’s own, at relaxed cruisin’
or city traffic, doesn’t make a difference, it just knocks at will. It’s feels like
someone puts a stick between my wheels so they get blocked for a millisecond!
Sometimes, this vibrates through the whole car! ABS light is on, and we’ve pulled
the ABS/airbag fuse out, but the problem still exists! So I’m not sure if this is an
ABS problem. Could it be the differential?

While driving on the highway at higher speeds, at EACH gas pedal release, there’s
some sort of a another knock again! HELP!

Always treated this beautiful car with respect! It’s my pride & joy and I never
abused it in any way!! If my car’s not happy, I’m not happy!!! :-(

Hi there, the non-responsiveness of the gearbox when pulling off from the traffic lights might be from a low autobox oil level. To properly check the level, warm up the gearbox (take a small trip) then with the engine running select all gears (R,D,2,1) 3 times. Leave the selector in P (engine still on) take out the transmission dipstick, wipe it clean the take a reading. When hot the level should be between min - max. If the box is still cold the level won't reach the min level. Also when the temp is to high ATF expand and goes over max if theres to much oil.

As for the ABS light read here

When i bought my 2.3 it had the ABS light all the time. I have checked the sensor, they where OK, i have measured the plug on the ABS was ok, so the only problem that remained was the module. I have bought one from a break yard from Germany and mounted it on the car.....same result, light on. After some time Tompion a member here discovered that there's a dry joint in the module which needs re-soldering. Sooo...

1) have a read here first:

2) If the first part doesn't help then read this:

PS: both my modules had the no 2 problem.

PS: Also check the MAF, which has a big effect on the autobox.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Octavian_P!

I'll check my gear oil tomorrow after having shifted through the auto gears 3 times.

Your advice regarding ABS is VERY-VERY welcome too!   :)

I'll let you know how things evolve!
