hi to all members,a small problem i would like some advice on please.yesterday i took the daughter to gatwick airport in her 2.3 ultima,temp gauge hardly moved off the blue section....and not much heat from the vents..anyway today i took out the thermostat and i noticed that it was stuck open..no problem i could easy remove the new stat from the scrap saloon she has...so thats what i did...i fitted the new stat bleed out the system (after purging the system with water from the garden hose) all airlocks are out..new anti freeze is in...started the engine...let it warm up,nice and hot from the vents...but the temp gauge is still in the blue section..and has only moved up a small amount..even after the engine idling for a good 20mins or more..all hoses are nice and hot..not boiling..but hot...so would it be the sender unit...??...i notice its not like the type i have seen on the scrap car..seems to have 2 pins..so i cant use the single pin type...and what one is the sender unit ??...the one near the front of the engine or the one behind it??...thank you for any replies..regards den. :).

The temp sender is the one nearest the front of the engine with the squarish multiplug. The one behind it is the ECT sensor which has a rounded multiplug.

A new temp sender is about £15 from FMD :)

Hi a word of warning before removing the sender unit, there is a fair probability that on removal the fine threads in the plastic will strip as I recently experienced and after advice from this forum I had to use quiksteel to fix the problem, my advice would be, is to soak the area with WD 40 a few times were the sender unit is located and leave for at least 24 hrs this will probably save you a lot of heart ache.

I had an erratic temperature guage and my problem turned out to be poor contact at the multi-plug. Not the one mentioned above, but the main multiplug for the engine - the one which allows the entire engine circuits to be unplugged for engine removal. Mine is a 2.9 12v and is located OS inner wing low down in the engine bay. Undo its centre bolt and as it unscrews it pulls the plug out of its socket.

It could also be a poor connection at the other multiplug, the one by the actual sender unit. An open circuit or high resistance will cause a low temperature reading. A short to ground of the wire should cause a high temperature reading.
