Title: Handling at speed - Waterbed
Post by Ultima2300 on Apr 26th, 2008, 6:50pm
About a month ago I noticed the ol' girl wasn't feeling as planted on the road at Motorway speeds as usual.

I put it down to the high wind and rain, etc of the time. I then put it down to the fact that I had four tyres in desperate need of replacement.  I've put brand new rubber all round and guess what?  No difference. ::)

The sensation is like the wheels aren't connected to the body and at about 65mph upwards it's like driving a waterbed and feels as if the tail about to flick out, usually to the right.

I'm going to take to the garage next week, but i would appreciate it if anyone can give me some pointers so I can tell the mechanic where to start.

Thanks in advance, a slightly seasick

Geoff

Wishbone bushes as a first guess, possibly steering rack or wheel bearing??

thats exactly what i had last summer, was offside rear wheel bearings, in fact they were so bad and dangerous the garage reckoned i could've lost the wheel anytime. the only thing i noticed before the symptoms you now have was a slight squeaking.
i suggest you raise the car immediately or asap and check the wheels for lateral play....

Thanks Guys.  Someone did mention in the carpark at work a squeak from the offside rear.

I'll get it raised in the morning and check.

Thanks once again

Geoff

Hi 2300
Had the same problem with my 23oo.Loose wheel bearing nuts on the rear was the problem. if it is your problem you need to change the the nuts as you only tighten them once.

Turned out to be off side rear bearing.

The garage managed to put the new bearings in by pressing them in by hand.

Hub is apparently worn - does anyone have one?  Preferably near Manchester, but I do need this quickly as the car is my daily driver. I've also posted in the wanted section.

Thanks in advance

Geoff

£273.00 including an oil and filter change which was way overdue.

I'll colour myself happy.  I was expecting far worse.

Best wishes

Geoff
