Title: gearbox problems
Post by pauls0701 on May 3rd, 2008, 10:08pm
hi all i have been a granada cossie owner for a while but have just brought the wife a scorpio its a m reg 2.0 16v ultima and we are having probs with the gear box
last week when driving it home form were we brought it i lost 4th gear to start with then when pulling away from some lights it wouldnt change up out of first so dropped the gear leaver down to second and it would go in to second. all this time the speedo wasnt working either other than when i braked the speedo would start working and you could feel it drop in to top gear but as soon as i let off the brake it would drop out again. got my mate to do a fault code check last sunday and it came up with speed sensor. but then it was fine for nearly a week but last night it started doing the same again with the added thing of the cruse control light coming on when braking also noticed that it seems to be lossing some gear box oil from somewhere. i have got it booked in with my mate next sat for him to have a look but would like to be able to give him an idea where to start looking.

THe best place to look is the VSS situated on the Nearside of the gearbox . Needs a new one by the sound of it , sends data to the ecu which just about controls everything.
Quite and easy DIY Job if you can get far enough underneath. I am sure someone else will give you an idea as to cost.

The gearbox oil can be coming from a couple of places .. the Oil Cooler pipes or the front oil seal

still been having problems with it so this is what has been haping over the last week or so

picked a gear box up monday it is now sat in my garage so if i need it its there and the oil from it is now all over the boot floor in my car so thats a job for me to do on my car now. got the wiring loom now which i will be inspecting and testing prior to it being fitted also got a new speed sensor so plan for next sat is this
fit new gear box wiring loom
fit new speed sensor
renew gearbox filter. sump gasket, and filter o rings (all on order from ford parts uk)
renew gear box oil
if after doing all this it doesnt cure the problems then the gearbox will be thrown in

Paul, good luck with it...sounds like you've got it sussed and you're going about it in the right order.

There is a great deal about these kinds of faults on the forum, you might find something helpful. If the scan showed the VSS you might be lucky and not have to touch the box itself.

Regards, Bruce.
