Title: Air Con probs
Post by ChrisF on May 8th, 2008, 2:38pm
I have a problem with the Air Con or to be more precise lack of it.  The pump doesn't cut in. I have a sneaking suspicion the the last owner has had a problem with the Air Con and disabled it in some way.  Is there any way of checking it.

First check the fuses if you look on the aircon pages there are all the relevent check tip, if you read it carefully you'll learn a lot and also all the threads that have been posted too.

I'm just going home from work now but I think you'll find what you need here

Hope it goes well for you...

Try turning, by hand (engine off  ;)) the clutch wheel at the front of the compressor pump. If it won't turn then it means the pump is seized.

If it does turn okay, then the system may just need re-gassing  :)

It doesn't turn, is this a common problem. Can it be replaced easily.

hi there

replacing the compressor isn't that hard. the system should be emptied by an a/c place first. then it just a few bolts (4, iirc) for the pump body and 2 for the pipes.

remember the pump is heavy. best to tie a rope around it first before trying to remove it.

If this is the problem, then has he disabled the clutch in some way like removing a fuse or something.

I have checked out the clutch and it does turn around its just a little stiff but it is possible with one hand.  But it dosn't 'engage'.  Any ideas?

Chris.
If the system runs low on gas,the pressure switch on the receiver/dryer behind the N/S plastic cover behind the rad grille, will disable the system to prevent damage. You could momentarily bypass it or check it's continuity. If it needs replacing you can unscrew it without depleting the gas as it has a valve underneath it which cuts off the flow.

This can be a symptom of a faulty expansion valve - I had the same problem and thought it was the compressor but it turned out to be the valve (bit cheaper than a new compressor!)

I've shorted out the pressure switch and the compressor works (courtesy of gozz).  So it looks like it needs topping up, does this happen often, although it seems like the previous owner just ran it into the ground, so it could be just topping up.  Or a leak!

Should be cheked ever couple of years  in reality but if it has not got any leaks then it should be ok for several.. IF it has not been done for a while its got to be worth spending a few pounds to get it checked over and tested for leaks.
