Title: Gearbox again...
Post by Octavian_P on May 13th, 2008, 11:08am
Hi there, i'm back.

I don't know if you remember but i had some trouble with the box slipping very bad in a 2-3 change.

I did an oil change (pumped it out through out the dipstick tube) and added a second oil cooler. Things got better, for a few month the box acted perfectly, did some combination of heavy traffic, and high motorway speeds and all went perfect. Suddenly on one morning when i selected D the box simply thumped violently in gear, R also thumps bad. Now all gear changes thump pretty nasty and if i try to accelerate harder each time the box shifts the TCS kicks in. I found a "remedy" if a drive about 5 km and engine temps go to normal, sopping the engine for about 5 minutes and restarting it cures the problem. I have driven about 250 km (mountains / city) without stopping the engine and the box acted again perfect (engine braking, selecting 2,1, OD -OFF, kickdowns etc.). After a 5 minutes break (engine stopped) it started thumping again.

I bought a new oil filter and oil and I'm preparing to open the box for the change, should i check something else ? What could give it the thumping. The speedometer seems to work fine so i thing the VSS is OK.

PS: i'm talking about the wonderful 24V cossie  ;D
PS2: I did an OBD2 check and no fault codes !

Firstly, have you cleaned the MAF - use carburettor cleaner - a 5 minute job.
Did mine a few days ago and gearchanges are now much smoother and fuel ecomony has improved about 10%.
Got to be worth a try if you asl me.

The MAF can be ruled out, it's clean, also disconnecting it makes the engine run bad.

Hi Octavian. That sounds just like mine, cold starts would be ok for a couple of miles, 1-2nd would jolt, 2-3rd would give a loud rifle sound which would resonate through the car unless you managed to feather the throttle to ease it in. O/D would normally be ok, downshifts were quite hard, sport mode gave savage bangs and bomps on shifts ::)

And if you were at like 20mph and needed some throttle as it shifted up into 3rd (overtake parked cars, cyclists etc) then it would punish you with an extra loud crack which a death person could hear and everyone within a half mile radius would turn and stare at you..

Warm the car for a few miles then park up for 5 minutes, it would usually clear, sometimes till the next cold start it would then behave and shift *almost* normally. Start the car and drop straight into reverse, don't even go there :-X

You could normally judge by the resistance of the shifter whether it'd thump into reverse, if you got it shifted it through reverse into drive quick enough sometimes you'd avoid the thump. Otherwise it'd drop in really hard and shoot the car 2ft unless you held the brakes tightly..

And then it started to both bang and lose gear on shifts, at this point my nerves got the better of me ;D

Yes, I nursed that car through gearshifts for 18 months, I could treach degrees in how to drive misbehaving Scorpio gearboxes ;D

Have you checked the looms over? When I was having issues, one of the guys mentioned either a bad valve or just a symptom the material worn off of the brake bands.

Is it reading ok on the OBD? What about TPS?

Regards, Bruce.

The engine and box loom are new, fully and completely refurbish by me. OBD shows no errors and the TPS is ok  :-X. I bought an oil filter and oil for it, i'll try to do a change, when i'll open the pan i'll see if i can find something wrong.

By the way could i clean or check the solenoids with the pan off ?

Welcome to the site. The MAF is in the inlet tract, if you’re car is a 12v you won’t have one. Details here:

Hi. To get to the filter you need to undo the autobox sump pan and drain the fluid. Not a hard job, just be careful you don't get covered in transmission fluid ;)

What engine do you have mate?

Regards, Bruce.

EDIT: This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/aboxfilters.htm) page should tell you everything you need to know ;)
