Hi all,

ive a problem with the abs on my 96 scorpio, everytime im just about to come to a halt at say 2-5mph, the abs kicks in, it doesnt do this at higher speeds, just when the car is about to stop? Has anyone had a similar problem? any help greatly appreciated.

This is what it says on the fault finder:

Brake PEDAL VIBRATES oddly?

Odd sensation on pedal under light braking and starting off?

YES:

No fault - ABS module tests the modulator by firing each solenoid in turn during the moving ABS test.  This can cause an odd sensation very occasionally if you are  braking lightly at the same time.

might be worth checking the tyre pressures and maybe even the sizes?? different sized tyres would do it.
Have you had a new one recently? used the spare?
try giving the ABS sensors a quick clean.

hi there

iirc, it's one of the sensors acting up a bit. give them and the toothed rings a clean with brake cleaner.

also clean the connectors to them. the rear one is under the rear seat base.

give the wheels a shake to check the wheel bearings.

Ok, will have to give that a try over the weekend, there is no abs fault light being trown up.

hi there

yes, that's right. it's something like one sensor has told the system that it's locked up just as you're nearly at rest, hence the abs cuts in and pumps the brakes.

My Granada used to do it almost everytime I slowed to a crawl to making the 90 deg into my drive. I put it down to the wide variation in my wheel rotation speeds due to the tight turn.

When it happened on mine it was too big an air gap on one of the rear sensors. This had been caused by the sensor ring wearing down the sensor when the wheel bearing failed. Compare the 2 sensors to see if one is shorter, the face should be flat not concave. I filed a bit off the mounting sleeve to get the sensor closer which solved the problem.
