it would appear my right side cam chain has snapped slipped or whatever, sounds like a bag of nails. got some one coming to confirm my suspitions over the weekend, but was wondering providing no other damage has occured what sort of price for parts i'm looking at. :(

hi there

omg!! :o

you could be looking at up to £1k for bits.

but.... first check everything else. a breaking up cat can sound terrible. ask tintin!

let us know how you get on.

think its definatley chain only running on 3 cylinders the car has only done 55,000 miles by the way.

hi there

same thing happened to tintin, but it was the cat & sparkplugs (which can go off over night!!).

check it all very carefully before doing anything.

wish i was closer to you. :(

when i turned engine off there was a puffing noise coming from the top of the engine on the r/h side listened to it for about 10 seconds and slammed the  bonnet down. smell of burning oil as well.

Or you could take a wee gamble, shell out a couple of hundred for a second hand engine and swap them over, I think that would be my solution

was thinking that but shame to waste a 55k engine, i think i will either fix it or set light to it.

i bought a cossie with same problem, found that the guides had failed so it put the timing out, this bent all 6 inlet valves on that side,if i remember right costs came to under £300.00 then my time fixing it hth

There's a big write up on the site about how to fix it - it's a long weekend job - more a pain due to the amount of stuff to remove and the care required putting it back together. You will have bent a couple of valves so head must come off too.

The guides are the weak point and will all need replacing. Budget about 700 quid for parts and make sure you get every gasket - hint, replace the chain tensioner gaskets, I didn't and ended up having to take the engine apart a second time to replace it - that was a real PITA.
