Title: AC on all the time.Dash master reset
Post by Jasper on Jun 13th, 2008, 8:22pm
Hello Everyone
I am new to the forum, just recently purchased a 1998 Scorpio 2.3 Ghia X estate Auto.
Got a couple of niggles at the moment, could anyone point me in the right direction .
No1
Every now and then the dash does a master reset,i have looked at the Scopio main site and found that the possible cause could be fitment of a new battery(not new) or low voltage during start up.Engine starts fine with no sign of low battery voltage, could this be linked too a potential fault on the fuse board?
No2 Niggle
The AC seems to be on all the time(great that it works but would be nice to turn it off to save a bit on fuel ;D)
I get all three speeds from the blower control switch, but even in the off position you can still feel the fan blowing but slowly.
The blower switch/AC on light does not luminate at all, this could be just a bulb failure, but pushing the switch does not seem to make any difference to the engine r.p.m.
This switch could be shot and keeping the AC on ?
Any pointers greatly appreciated.

hi there

does sound like you need a new battery or to have the charging checked.

re the a/c. how do you know the a/c c ompressor is running all the time? it's meant to cycle on and off when it gets down to about 4 oC.

have you watched the a/c clutch engaging? it will stay on for quiet a time to cool the interior to start with.

what speed are the engine cooling fans running at? fast, slow or not at all?

Thanks for the quick reply Scorpio man.
I will get the battery drop tested in the morning, charging is fine at 14.2Volts.its just that the battery does not give the impression that it is faulty,no problem to start.
Sorry but i am not to familiar with the correct opperation of the AC system, when the temp control knob is in the cold (blue)position,it blows colder than normal air, pushing the center blower knob to turn the AC off does nothing,it still blows colder than normal air.
Can the AC be turned off?or is it on always if the temp setting is in the blue?
Engine cooling fans but not yet sure of the speeds,i will check these the next time i get up to temp .
Thanks again for help so far
Richard

hi there

do you have the dial set at demist? that would keep the a/c on all the time.

cold air will flow for a time after switching off the a/c as the evaporator will be really cold.

re the fans. they will start up within 5 or 10 secs on engine start. this has nothing to do with the engine temp. it's to draw air though the condenser.

have a read though all the a/c stuff on the main site.

Thanks for your info Scorpio man
Battery drop test reads 9volts when cranking, engine starts fine but suspect this will get worse come the colder weather.
The fault with the AC was ,bulb blown in switch and excess movement in mounting plate holding heater controls.
This made it so you could not actualy push the switch in far enough to turn the AC off.Sorted now though.
Thanks

Battery voltage explains it - way too low. Should be not lower than 12 V in the morning; between 13.5-14.3 V while driving and charging. Symptoms: alarm going off at midnight, flicking instrument needles when contact on. HAve alternator checked before JUST changing the battery!

Hello Ray
Yep the battery will be replaced soon.
Alternator is fine @14.3v under full load conditions.
It was that every now again it would do a full reset, but always starts straight away,no evedence of slow cranking.not a magor problem at the moment.
Best Wishes Richard
