Title: melted ignition coils
Post by david49uk on Jun 17th, 2008, 9:00pm
I decided to check my plugs because of this ongoing lumpy tickover problem and noticed one of my coils is badly melted although my car goes well  would this cause my lumpy tick over. dave. this is one hell of a puzzle.

If its melted thats a fair indication of a problem, it shouldnt melt. had freelander in w/shop with melted coil last week, it also melted the ECU.

the coils get really hot as the air cant escape its like an oven ..after i had x2 coils go I removed the plate and left off and the temperature on the coils dropped significantly...the plate's only cosmetic but causes i belive a serious problem

Will try it with plate off and try and get some more coils could they cause tick over problem but still be ok at higher revs. dave

I cant see why you would want to put cover back in winter...the coils will get just as hot  in their oven whether winter or summer....the coils are sealed in epoxy so condensation wont be an issue.......all the plate does is tidy up the cosmetics but raises temp of coils  by a high amount..would be worth putting a temp guage on to monitor .......but reason the coils break down/fail is almost certainly the very high temp they have to endure.......

ford cured the problem on mk 2 galaxy 2.3 by using the externel coiles  and leads from the 2.0 8 v scorpio .galaxy.transit.ldv
