Title: Intermittent battery light!!!
Post by simonsp on Jun 22nd, 2008, 7:10pm
Hello everyone I am new to this forum. I bought another scorpio (2.9 12v (N reg))a month ago and it had an on going problem that the battery light would come on and rev counter would drop to zero. Looking at other peoples problems I thought it could be the alternator so I have replaced it. I forgot to mention that I bought a brand spanking new battery the day after I bought the car. Now the rev counter does not drop and after about five minutes of driving the battery light comes on but very faintly. Sometimes it goes off after a few miles. I have done the instrument cluster reset and on battery menu whilst driving it says 13.9v - 14v (that is with radio on) At night it says 13.8v - 13.9v. (with radio and lights on). Also after I did the alternator change the coolant and washer lights are now on although they have ample fluid in the  reservoires. Any answers are greatly appreciated. BTW I have arranged for monthly subscription and I will also put extra donation in to this fabulous website. LONG LIVE SCORPIOS. Cheers Simon

Sounds as though one of the diodes in the rectifier part of the alternator has decided to pack up . From memory its a 3 phase rectifier and the reason you get the light after a few miles is because the battery has fully charged, but  its ok to use it like that if you can put up with it .
I also understand that you can replace just the diodes if you can still get them others on here with better electrical understanding will most probable know more than me .
