Title: Brake problems
Post by caterex on Jul 3rd, 2008, 4:14pm
Please help
My 24v has a problem with the ABS & Traction control panel lights for the last few months, they just won,t go off.The MOT is due shortly and I need to sort it out.
Questions.
1    Is the Traction Control part of the braking system.
2    If it is, can I remove it ,to
include the  panel light. (I have had the operating
    cables removed some years ago).
3    Wheel sensors have all been checked, and are OK.
what else should I check for!

All help greatly appreciated.

The traction control (TCS) isn't part of the braking system, but both the TCS & ABS get signals from the rear wheel sensors.

You say you've had them checked....how were they checked ?

Lift the rear seat up & underneath the two flaps of carpet at either end you will find the sensor connectors. Unplug the sensor connectors & attach a multi meter to the pins. If either of the sensors is open circuit then you've found the culprit, but if both have the same resistance reading then it could be down to dirty sensors or dirty sensor rings.

Removing the rear sensors from the hubs & giving them a good clean & giving the sensor rings a clean may extinguish the warning lights on the dash  :)

ABS & TCS lights coming on at the same time can also be caused by a failing rear wheel bearing or even a difference of more that 4 psi between rear tyre pressures  ;)

Hope this helps  :)

P.S....have you tried disconnecting the battery for a few minutes ?....this can sometimes do the trick as well  ;)

Thanks Jonnycab for your reply.
I tested each sensor at connection close to each wheel, and they generated between 0.1 and 1.4v AC. then I disconnected the multi-plug at the ECM, not much variation. However I new I had some information nocking about, I eventually found it,  (well my wife did) it covers in detail my particular model ABS & Traction control, what tests can be carried out using a multi meter, and other tests that require more dedicated equipment.I expect to be able to atleast point to the general area that is at fault. I will let you know how I get on.
By the way if the information I have is of use to any members I will be quite happy to pass on.
My particular 95,24v uses Teves IV-GI (ITT 04-GI) ABS & Traction conttrol system.(28 pin ECM) Fault codes and wiring digram also available.

Sounds useful,
I'd be interested in that.

Dave
This book covers 22 systems and about 400cars from 94-2001, when I get my car sorted I will try and scan the relevant pages and let you have a copy, it s a training manual, so I am sure someone will tell us if we are in breach of any copyrights.
