Hello,
Usually trouble free we are having a problem with the ignition key on our Scorpio.
Had been away on holiday for three weeks returning last Sunday. Battery was nearly flat but started on the second turn of the key, so no problem there.
Wife has been using the car this last week and reports the igntion key won't turn, she spent an hour in a car park trying to get it to start. I tried it when she got home, turned and started first turn.
Today she says it has got worse and won't start at all. I thought it might be the problem with the key unable to turn against the steering lock, but no, the key just turns slightly and then seems to come up against a complete block. Completely slack for that part of the turn that can be made and then stop.
Any ideas please, something to do with the security key perhaps as it has not been used for a while.
I don't think it is the original key and it is the only one I have got.

wbph.
The little wards that make up the lock wear and produce your problem.You can get a kit of little parts from Ford to rebuild it,but you need to turn the switch on to depress the little plunger that releases the barrel.I think there are instructions on the site somewhere.

I have the same problem, sometimes easy to turn, sometimes takes me 5 or 10 min's to do.
I called into a FMD on Saturday and they quoted me £37 just to marry and assemble a new barrel to my key, or £14 for a diy kit.
They also quoted an extra £45 for them to fit it :o

Your choice . But if you have doubts about rebuilding the lock yoursef then take it out, simple, and take up their offer of of £37 ie: £23 for labour. You will need to get them to 'read' the key anyway so you know how to assemble the unit. The main thing is to get it done BEFORE you cannot turn it to position one. This is critical to enable you to press in a small plunger which releases the lock. Once re-built it is a simple matter to replace it. I take it you have read the links in the previous posts.

I may have to, At 61 my hands and fingers aren't as nimble as they used to be.

I got my built up ign lock today from FMD, £39.53, good job I did as well, the original refused to turn at all (tried for 20 min's) when I finished work at 8pm
Had to call a very nice man in a bright yellow van.
His solution to get it to position 1 was brute force with a pair of pliers on the back with the key in the barrel, removed offending barrel, fitted new one, time taken 30min's.
Rather a lot cheaper as well than FMD's £45 quote for fitting it.

I thought I had posted before but it must have got lost.
My local Ford dealer £13.53 for the kit which included a new barrel, £10 to the Fitter to assemble it in his lunchtime, and a new key cut to get the old lock out.

Once I had the parts it took about 15 minutes.

Went to my local FMD in Crayford Kent this am and got me a new barrel 'cos the old one is getting a bit sticky. £13.67 plus a tenner for the bloke who assembled it while i waited.
