Title: Break lights staying on?
Post by hopper on Jul 9th, 2008, 5:38pm
Hi Guys/Ladies,

I have a 1995 M reg 24v Estate, The weather has been very wet recently and I now have 2 faults.
1. the alarm is going off with it not being set.
2. the rear break lights and high view brake light are staying on even though the ignition is off.

Any help would be appreciated i think a relay has got stuck in the open position for the lights but not sure why alarm going off without even being set,

Regards Chris

hi there

i'd check the fuse boxes for dampness. sounds like there's a bit of water in there. :-/

I agree with Andrew BUT the first place to check re the alarm is the bonnet switch. Situated just to the left of the bonnet catch on the cross member. Is there any sign of water in the passenger footwell ??. Sure sign that water is building up around the Auxillary fusebox. Have you got a battery cover fitted??.
Read THIS (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/battery.htm) which may help and explains how to ensure the drain holes by the battery can be kept clear of debris.

Thanks for the 2 replies,

The battery cover is fitted and both fuse boxes main and auxhilary are both in very good condition and dry, the drain holes are also clear. I'll look into the bonnet catch switch dampness for the alarm. Any ideas which relay R1, R4, R5 in central fuse box may cover rear brake lights.

I have now also removed every Relay in both fuse boxes and the brake lights still stay on, so i thought i'd take out the fuse No.14 a 15amp fuse which covers the brake lights and indicators, the brake lights still stay on?
The only way to turn them off was to disconnect the battery. My next step appears to be removing all the fuses 1 by 1 to see if they have been rerouted by a previous owner. Could the fault also be with the switch which is fitted at the top of the brake pedal?

Obviously getting power from somewhere! I would be checking the wiring loom and also check the ashtray is not shorting out but if you have removed ALL the fuses then that is highly unlikely so I would go for degradation of the wiring loom as the most likely cause, Others might have other better ideas though .

Have found that the brake lights are drawing power from the ABS circuit I've removed fuses 46 and 47 which have stopped the brake lights staying on. The brake lights work as normal too just have to be careful without the ABS.

Hi

Fuses 46 & 47 are permanently live and there is a wire to the brake lights via the ABS unit, so 2 thoughts spring to mind.
1 Faulty ABS unit (unplugging it should rule that out).
2 A short in the loom to the ABS.

Some people have had problems with the wires under the auxiliary fuse box, so might be worth a look there.
