Hi guys, got a problem with my '97 2.3 ghia. I was replacing the battery sunday morning, all was going well apart from the contortion of getting it in ( i realise now the front of the tray comes out!). When i connected the battery up the car locked it self with my keys on the drivers seat! I've had her 8 wks and not got round to having a spare cut, Bridgend Ford say they cant help but gave me number for lock smith. Any ideas, am i going to have to pop a window, if so where can i get replacement glass? Regards Jim.

Hello and welcome :)

One of the moderators on here, Snoopy (a former car thief allegedly) has a method of getting in without causing any damage.

Do you still have the bonnet open?? if so i would imagine you could link the electric windows relay and open a window....hmmmmm in fact i wonder if you could do that with the doors locks...... off to investigate ;)

easy and no damage caused. i do this on a regular basis as im a patrol for a breakdown company.

i've removed some of the detail for security reasons.

If its dead locked then you cannot do this the inside handles are immobilised.

Thats what deadlocking does !

never assume that its deadlocked as most of the time when this happens they dont deadlock, try something that will take less than 5 mins, or you can carry on thinking its deadlocked and start back feeding the wiring which will take a lot longer and could possibly cause damage to electrical components.

[] I don't understand what triggers the deadlocking but on the 2 occasions our M....o has done it, this method has done the trick. I used the flat backing strip off a fluorescent light (if you happen to have one lying around :))
I also don't understand what prompts the bloody thing to lock itself in the first place!

The car may lock when replacing the battery, but it won't deadlock, so is easy to get into.

I suppose any would-be, first time, teenage oik car thief will now be aware of this method, seeing as it's just been posted on a free to view public forum ???.........a bit like putting an advert in the local paper when you go on holiday, informing the local hoodies on the easiest way to break into your house ???

But as Snoopy says, if it is deadlocked via the remote or key, then this method will not work & the reason is so these car thieves cannot steal the contents of your pride & joy.......unless of course, they smash a window :-/

Who's gonna be next to reveal to the local car thief how to actually start & drive the car off without the use of the chipped key then ? ???

I dont think any would be car thieves would have learned anything new here ;)

After all they're not going to steal a Scorpio, so if they break in its to steal something so they'll just put a window in

I was already aware of the door trick having already done it to my better halfs fiesta and chipped the paint whilst doing it, i have also seen the damaged caused to my mates clio when some arse did it to his car, so i don't think its a big secret to those that are inclined to go about nicking/ breaking into cars. The point of my post was to see if there was another way to get in with as little risk of damage as possible. Again many thanks to all who replied, and apologies if anyone though it an innapropriate question.

As far as I'm concerned Jim, there was nothing wrong with the question. I think we're all sensible enough to have sent you a PM if we thought we were giving away any state secrets. If by any chance the local riff-raff were having their regular fix of listening to us rabbiting on about scorpios }{ , I'm sure they'd be laughing up their sleeves at such unsophisticated means of breaking in anyway.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend anyone ;)...... I know it's common knowledge just how to open a door without the key, but just thought it a bit inappropriate to reveal it to the masses in an open forum :-/

There was nothing wrong with asking the question, as alot of us, me included, have done the same ::)....but maybe this particular answer should have been in the form of a private message :)

I suppose the sensible thing to do would be to have a spare key kept indoors, just in case of such emergencies. If you don't have a spare, then Ford can cut a new one from reading the code on your old key or looking the code up using the registration for £10 (will of course need your reg document & ID as proof of ownership). The new key won't be chipped, so it won't start the car, but it will unlock the door :)

My reply wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, I was just airing a general concern. So I apologise if anyone took it personally as that was not my intention :)
