When I activate the wipers I get four loud clicks and no wiping! This happens when the selection is intermittent, normal and fast. The screen wash produces the jet of ... screen wash, but no wiping.

Occasionally, when I start the car I get the loud clicks without the wiper system engaged.

I've checked the linkage and it is OK.

Any thoughts?

Does it sound like a relay maybe, if it is breaking down it may just click.... :'( Just a quick thought

OK. I've pulled the relay (R2). Forgive my ignorance, but how would I check to see if the relay is bust?

Well a relay is just a switch that carries the larger current to the motor, it takes less current to operate the switch part soas not to overload the wiring on initial swithchon.
The clicking would probably be due to this happening, indicating the solenoid windings being fine.
If the actual contacts are burned or dirty on the motor side then the motor wouldn't run.

There will be a diagram on the relay showing which pin is connected to where... ??? a continuity test with a multimeter, (or a battery and bulb) would show if there was a fault anywhere.... ::)

It's a bit hard to describe but hopefully you will work it out.... ;) An easier way is to get a replacement relay(scrappies for instance) and change it anyway..... ;)

You can test the motor by running a wire from the +pos tarminal on the battery and touching it on the positive connection on the motor, {} you'd have to make sure which colour wire to test though, don't bung it on the earth unless you like sparklers... ;D

I would sugest "loud clicks" may not be a relay, but more a motor or linkage problem. I would check where the linkage connects to the motor. Failing that, get someone to acivate the wipers while your head is under the bonnet, to see (I mean hear) where the loud clicks are coming from.

If a realy is "clicking" it will be quiet, and anyway, it usually means it is working OK.

could it be that the splines inside the wiper have worn or the splines at the motor shaft end?
only a suggestion
