Title: Leaking steering rack
Post by Scorpio_Mike on Aug 9th, 2008, 9:02am
Noticed I have a leak from the drivers side sterring rack gaiter - looks like a small split or pinhole.
Can I just replace the gaiter or does this indicate the rack seals are worn and its time for a new rack ?

Anyone know how much a new / recon rack is and if it is a simple job to replace ?
Thanks.

Mike.
There should'nt be any oil in the gaiters, you must have a dodgy seal it wont get better!Exchange rack ex factors £123 plus VAT.Fairly easy job.One bolt on shaft clamp, two track rod ends(best to fit new),two retaining bolts, two pipes.Easier to lower rack slightly to remove pipes, best to fit new O rings, but I have got away with old.

Mike. Gozz is right.....of course!. I got mine from CPA in Lewes if you want a factor. Usually a £100 deposit for the return of the old rack. On SOME cars ...mine and Johnnycabs for instance there is a large metal bracket welded to a cross member under the rack and this prevents the rack from simply dropping once the bolts have been undone. Both JC and I had to remove the track control arm to let the rack come away. Other members have ground the bracket off as it serves no clear purpose. JC has done his rack so many times that he now just 'whistles' and the thing jumps off!! ;D  The CPA racks came from AMK a major remanufacturing supplier whose website is worth a look. PM me if I can help further. Good luck, Mike. ;)

Anyone know if the track rod ends are the same as for the previous Granada / Scorpio range ?
Only ask as I have a spare set sitting on the shelf in my garage.
Can't seem to find any compatability info.
Thanks.

Mike.
The track rod ends for the Scorp are not the same as the Granada Scorp, which are both the same. The Scorps are handed because the pin is offset from the shaft.
Yours may well go again, but I always replace mine(unless they were recently new)because the vehicles are in commercial use.

I have this problem now too.   :-/

I'm  loath  to  shell  out  a lot of dosh  for a replacement  rack and  even more for fitment  (   I'd need a  hoist ,  and  anyway,  it's way beyond my DIY  capabilities ).

I'll keep it going  for a few more months but  it looks as if I may have to think of the unthinkable................ :-[

You don't need a hoist  :o
Just axle stands, a trolley jack and a few basic tools.

Simmo and I did mine in a couple of hours including coffee breaks and chin-wagging.

There is a company called Kelly Bray steering racks selling them on ebay for about £115 inc. delivery.
