Title: radiator fan
Post by big_timer on Aug 25th, 2008, 1:45pm
hiya lads
ive just noticed while gettin car ready for M.O.T that once ive started the engine the radiator fan comes on ,even at cold start affecting the tickover.it comes on for about 30 secs then goes off.then about 1 min later it comes back on sending the revs up again, even though the a/c is off is there some kind of sensor away or has it to do with the hbc switch(last post).
please help.
at tickover .0.8,1.0 l/100km once fan comes on 1.3 or 1.5 l/100km

The aircon comes on if the selector is set to windscreen.
Watch the centre of the aircon pulley, if the bolts at the centre of the pulley rotate the aircon is on.

i once had this and the plug on the radiator fan switch was loose. Check that first it is located on the inlet manifold.

i turned the switch to downward foot direction and the a/c stiil came on.it seems that even though the switch is turned off the a/c seems to be coming on intermittently.the centre bolts of the pulley are stationary when its off then it starts up when the a/c knocks in.is there a reset for the a/c switch or is it faulty.i dont want to fail the emmissions test because it is erractic on tickover.
please help

You could just unplug it temporarily, there’s a plug underneath the compressor.

what do you think it is tompion?
faulty hbc ,sender?

I wouldn’t have thought the HBC as that is the heater blower control, so shouldn’t affect the aircon as such although it may have an influence on how quickly the aircon cycles when it’s on.
I’m not that well up on the aircon, so can’t really answer, you could try reseating the ribbon cable behind the climate control panel.

just disconnected the a/c multiplug and it is ticking over lovely.must have something to do with the a/c circuit.iit wont do any damage to the a/c will it having it unplugged will it?

by the way forgot to mention that after i unplugged the multiplug the a/c light still came on at the hbc.i thought by disconnecting it that would break the circuit?

It won’t do any damage in the short term, but it needs to be run periodically to prevent seal damage, but no problem just to get it mot’d.
The light will still come on.

Does it affect the revs much when it cuts in? It should be barely noticeable, you may need to clean the IAC valve:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iacvdata.htm

I usually just take the valve off, pour in some light oil or redex & work the piston back & forth to force oil into the chamber (the piston rod is hollow, so oil will be forced through it if you cover the bleed hole at the end), others use carb cleaner.

It's on top of the inlet manifold, the arrow in the middle of this picture points to it's plug:

Don't go mad tightening the bolts as it's a plastic manifold (not that I've heard of anyone having problems with this part of the manifold).

both radiator fans are coming on from cold and staying on.a/c pump is still disconnected.are the two linked or is there a temp sensor faulty.i dont want to prematurely burn out the fan motor.

big_timer.
Just as a two minute experiment, try seperating the de ice switch plug(offside of evaporator housing).Someone had fitted a relay in place of one of mine(never knew why),but the fans ran all the time.

Have you checked the ECT sensor in the inlet manifold, if it's disconnected, has a bad connection or is faulty then this can cause the fans to run at full steam all the time  :)

Edit.......Sorry, didn't read all the postings properly before & have just seen that this was also suggested by ScorpioWorld, although it was referred to as the fan switch.

Have you ruled out the ECT yet ?  :)
