Title: power steering rack stripdown
Post by jossmirff on Sep 3rd, 2008, 12:03pm
Hi guys, have any of you striped down the power rack and replaced the seals/"O" rings ? I did, I removed the nearside rack support bush and a very thin o-ring , sat in a very wide groove on the outside of the bush,  obviously it dont live there, my question is, does this thin o-ring sit up to the hilt of the bush or am I missing a larger fatter o-ring that sits in the large groove or does it need both ? there was no debris in the ram chamber, so I thought I would ask before removing my other rack from the car and stripping that one to find out what that one has inside. Oh and I have both of the seals just in case it is either or both, all replies appreciated, thanks ... Joss.

Hi there, thanks for the link, but it does not show the components of the rack/ram itself, I need to see the actual support bush assay. That will have the position of the seals and how many ? reason that I am doing this is that the rack itself, the ram, control arms and joints all look in excellent condition except it was p*****ing fluid out of the nearside as if the rack had been totaly refurbed but the wrong or wrongly positioned o-ring fitted. If we get this right it could save the members a fortune on future steering rack probs, as the repair bill for the o-rings stands at only £2.30p and the stripdown and rebuild which I can detail will take 30 mins including cleaning. ....  My other half gets out of the hospital in a few days after nearly 4 weeks, so It should give me more  time to remove and strip the other rack as I dont have to go there twice a day... I will post when its done .. thanks .. Joss.
