My scorpio is a 1998 2.5td auto. One day I found the battery is dead so I swop the battery with another car. When I got to the destination, turn the key off as usual. The car is still running, and because it is a diesel, disconnect the battery does not help, and because been an auto, I cannot stall the car either, so I tried to unplug the fuses(fuel pumps, ignition etc), none of them stop the engien running. So the AA man turned up and cut off the wire to the shut-off solenoid on the injection pump. The engine stopped, but a buzzing noisy is still coming from the pump area, this inidcates there is a constant live feed to the pump, so the procedure to switch the car off now becomes: turn the key off, pop up the bonnet, unplug the wire to the solenoid(engine is switch off now), then go back lock the car with central locking, disconnect the battery, and shut the bonnet!!! The headlights, wipers, brake lights and indicators have also stopped working.

The car still starts first time, and the buzzing noise only can be heard AFTER the engine been started. When I took the key out, all the dash lights goes out.

Is this the common fuse relay box problem(they all seems dry)? Or is there something wrong with the ECU? If anyone can help i would really appreciate it. thanks, Tony

UPDATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took off the fusebox on the battery side and discovered a mini swimming pool. So I disassemble it and dry it out, then put it all back together.

BINGO,

NOW, the engine will switch off when I turn the key.

However,

none of the headlights are working. The indicator dont work, the brake lights dont work.

The beam does work, the parking light does work, the hazard does work.

I have only cleaned the fuse board on the battery side, is this something to do with the driver side fuse board??? ?

Will the petrol fuse board fit my diesel??? ?

How can I clean the copper blade inside the fuse board properly as some of them are badly corroded?

I don't really know alot about the diesel, but could the stop solenoid on the fuel pump actually be faulty & need replacing ? :-/

Like Jc I know little about the diesel, how about relay 17 fuel injection pump - in the auxilliary fuse box. Assuming the diesel has one. Would the engine keep running if that was stuck?

there was an easier way to stop your engine running was to slacken the nut on the fuel filter and purge the the filter that would have starved the pump of fuel and the engine would have stopped no need to cut wires or pull fuses

You've not fitted the multiplug back in properly on the drivers side fusebox, the end of it has two small lugs that need to hook into place before you push it home ;D

thanks for your reply. Do you mean the one looks like the scart socket with a metal bracket on the back??? I double checked it, it seems fine. And I didnt stripe the driver side fuse box.

hi there

most of the headlights issues are caused by that plug. have you moved the plug at anytime? i'd disconnect it and refit, then see how you go.

btw, what's with the photo of central heating pipework?

Yes, I did unplug it when I try to switch engine off. But, I did refit it. I will quadruple check the multiplug(the scart plug thing?).

Its the formation of copper salts and the best way to reove it is by rubbing using acid or similar is NOT recommended. Very fine wet and dry will do it but remember that you will be removing some of the thickness if that hasn't already happened.

The large mutiplug on the main fusebox has two lugs which MUST locate in the fittings on the side of the fusebox BEFORE the plug is pushed home. It can appear OK ....BUT.... actually be one row of pins out and that will cause lighting problems, amongst others.

It is the multiplug at the end, put it back in and it works perfect now!!!
