Title: clutch pedal travel
Post by gawsworthboy on Oct 2nd, 2008, 2:08pm
Hi all.....just bought a low mileage 2.0 Ghia manual...the clutch only bites when the pedal is almost fully raised...is my clutch on its way out or can these be adjusted..Thanks team.

How many miles has the car done ? ....my old manual Scorp did 100K before it needed a new clutch.

If the pedal is high before it bites but is still biting well, then personally I wouldn't worry about it until it starts slipping or not engaging gear etc  ;)

The clutch is hydraulic so it can't be adjusted like a cable clutch, but it might be a good idea to get the system checked over for any leaks etc before condemning the clutch  :)

Hope this helps  :)

Thanks for that....it's done 70K with all the old MOT to proove the mileage.....I suppose it could have been driven badly during it's life but apart from this one item it's like a new car...really.....very  impressed.
Will check the level in the master cylinder if I can find it. Cheers

The clutch fluid is fed from the brake master cylinder reservoir via a side pipe on the right hand side of the reservoir.

The actual clutch master cylinder is attached to the clutch pedal. There is a way of adjusting the pedal travel via the pedal stop screw HERE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/manualtrans/ClutchMasterCyl.pdf), although this may not help in your case as it does sound as though the clutch is worn out.

But then hey !!  :D ....you never know  ;)

Hope this has been helpful & good luck  :)

If the fluid was a bit low but no sign of a leak, then it's a possibility that the clutch slave cylinder (attached to the clutch release bearing) may have a leak.

If this is the case, then the gearbox would have to come off......So while you were at it, it would make sense to replace the clutch as well  ;)

P.S....if the Scorp is on an M or early N reg plate then it should have a standard Granada clutch. If it's a later model then it will have a dual mass clutch fitted which means the flywheel probably has to be replaced as well....which means more cash  :(

My old N reg manual 2.0 Scorp had a normal granada clutch in it, so cost about £160 to replace. A friend who had a P reg manual with a dual mass clutch paid about £700 for a replacement. That was about 7 years ago, so I'd assume that they may have come down in price by now  :)

Hi JC, mine had a new clutch 2 years ago when they changed the engine, it cost about £200 at the time (and he left me with all the old bits too)
it didn't look all that bad to me but I suppose it was as well to renew it..... (now I've sold it..... :'( )

£200 is a good price....did it have the flywheel replaced as well ?

I remember my mate telling me that he paid £700 to have a new dual mass clutch supplied & fitted at the local Formula One.
Then again, these people do tend to charge alot of cash considering that half the time they don't have a clue what they're doing........Come to think of it, the car was in there for about 3 days  ::).... :)

I would imagine the flywheel had not been changed unless the replacement engine had it on, there wasn't an old one left in the boot.... it was and still is perfect , never had a problem in the first place but due to the work in progress he decided to change it.... You have to trust these people when it's 150 miles away..... car was in for about 6 weeks if you remember....

Thanks you guy's....it's a P reg and I cant find any leaks anywhere....didn't realise the dual mass had to have a new flywheel too....guess I'm in for some expense then further down the line. Should I just keep driving till the slippage starts then....can it do any damage to anything else if I just leave it till absolutely essential for clutch replacement???
