Hi all,

My 2.9 Cosworth has some teething troubles.
The gearchange is very erratic at all speeds, but once in top it drives lovely. The Overdrive does kick in, as I've switched the button on & off, and the 'box changes gear accordingly.
The other niggle, is that the speedometer needle will not read any higher than 25mph!! Even at motorway speeds, according to the speedo I'm doing 25mph ??? :o

I'm wondering if the two problems are related, and that the Vehicle Speed Sensor needs replacing. It looks like a dead easy job to do, but I would like some opinions before I go and get my hands oily ;D
I will also clean up the MAF at the same time, and maybe even change the 'box fluid & filter.

What price can I expect to pay for a new VSS, and where would be the best place to obtain one??

P.S It's a Ghia 2.9 24V Cosworth Estate, '94 (M) with 77,000 miles, and no rust ANYWHERE!! So much better than the 2.3 Ultima I had last.

Yep the two are related, the gearbox uses the info from the VSS, has it just started doing it?

It may just need a clean, they are inclined to stick a bit, especially if the car has been sitting for a while.

I think the last time someone mentioned buying a new one it was around £20 for the sensor itself from

Yes, it only started doing it a few days ago, the speedo was working OK when we first collected the car.

What would be the best thing to clean it with? I have some brake & carb cleaner in the shed, the same stuff I use to clean the MAF, would this be any good?

The Ford Parts website you have linked to doesn't list a VSS for a Scorpio ??? But I'm certain Ford could still supply one if needed?

You have to fill out the parts request form, they'll Email back with a quote.

I've been quoted £71 inc delivery for a new VSS from Fordpartsuk!!!! :o :o

I will be cleaning up the one already fitted first before I part with my money.
