Title: Advise please??
Post by bigmumf on Oct 11th, 2008, 11:13am
After bigging up my reliability (well the cars anyway!!) on this forum, the big old girl has decided not to start.  >:(Everything was fine last week, (MOT pass without an advisory!!) and running like a dream.  :)
For some reason, she just won't play this morning, :( turns over and turns over but no fire in the hole!  :-[
Checked the plugs & no spark, fuses & relays all seem OK, battery was fine but I think is about to give up the ghost so she's hooked to a trickle at the moment.  :'(
I know it's not anything massive, and I'm sure someone out there will have the answer.....

Sounds like fuel starvation. There is a fuel safety switch (red button) located in the boot lip on the saloon and on the estate it is located behind the cover of the right hand rear lamp Assy.
Try resetting this and see if this helps.

Pin your hopes on the battery. These cars need a hell of a lot of power to START although they will sometimes turn over. If the battery is off make sure you connect up the small black lead as it sometimes slips out of sight. Have you noticed the dials going 'haywire' when trying to start .....if so that is a sure sign of a duff battery.

A few suggestions that could be the reason for turning over but not firing......

1) Faulty fuel pump relay
2) Faulty crankshaft sensor
3) Check fuses - F31 (PCM),  F34 & F37 (eng managment) & F42 (fuel pump) - all in battery side fusebox http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fuseboxes.htm

Good luck

Thanks very much everyone, ;D I will be attacking the her tomorrow,  :)as it's raining lots, luckily the other half doesn't want to go out this afternoon!
The gauges were OK by the way, just the normal test. I don't think it's the battery simply because it churns and churns, I'm only charging it to be safe.
However I don't know the radio code!!!

I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow!!

Thanks to everyone for such quick replies by the way!

If you PM me the serial number on the side of the radio, then I can PM you back the radio code  :)

Check the big multi-pin connector on the drivers side fusebox is fitted correctly - strange things happen if it isn't  :o

I'd  check for   a below par battery.

The   "Flicking Needles Syndrome "  is  usually  a  sign of  poor  amperage , but not always.

I had this problem one morning,  after a few days of  idleness

Starter whirred OK , but no go.

Gave  it a jump start,   off she went    ::)

??? It appears that the low tension leads are somehow shorting, on closer inspection they're wrapped in insulation tape, unlike the rest of the wiring, does anyone know if this is normal, or am I facing a previous bodge ????
The tape is really brittle, but I guess that's years of heat!  Also, I've had a look at the red button in the boot (mines a saloon), and there is no play in it, I'm not sure if there should be? If I didn't know better I'd say it was stuck in ???
The only explanation for this is an 8 year old boy who helped unload the shopping, but he denies all knowledge....!!!!
Once again, thanks everyone!!
Oh, and if the chap who lives in Beechwood is reading this, I'm the one who waves everytime I see your Scorpio!!!

bigmumf.
There is nothing wrong with well insulated taped wiring,if yours is past it's best, strip it all off and rebind every wire singly before binding the together. If your fuel cut off switch is in its lowest position that is correct, when it operates due to inertia,it comes upwards and is easy to press down. You can test its efficacy by clumping the body in it's vicinity,in fact any heavy bump near to it will cause it to operate. In this case the engine will not play up or be intermittent,it just will not start.

:-[ Spark/no spark/spark/no spark. I've decided to get a new ignition wiring loom and give that a go, it's just the fact that it wasn't intermitant, she just wouldn't fire one morning!!!

Has anyone suggested it might be the immobiliser? Red LED on the dash, centre, by the windscreen.
