Title: aircon not working
Post by sierra20 on Oct 16th, 2008, 7:20pm
hi
my a/c is not working, the ac switch illuminates, but the compressor does not come on, i have run through the diagnostic sequences in the fault finding section, with the a/c on there is no power going to the compressor, checked all ruses realys, the only problem seems to be at the pressure switch, when checking the ohms between the pins it doesnt register anything, i tried bypassing the pressure switch by bridging pins 1 and 3 on the in loom connector and this didnt fire up the compressor either, is there anything else that i can try, is it likley to be the pressure switch?

Has it got gas in it?

i havent checked, i assumed that the compressor would still engage if it didnt, can i check to see if its got gas in it?, wouldnt bypassing the pressure switch make the compressor fire up? which i tried

Start the engine, push the A/C button on,  adjust both Temp buttons to the coldest setting    (  you have got Climate Control  haven't you ? )   then  observe the compressor, it should kick in regardless of whether the system is gassed or not.

If not,   then  leave it to the summer,  who needs  AC in this weather  anyway ?  :-*

Thats wrong,  the compressor clutch wont engage if there is insufficient pressure/gas in the system

Have you checked that the 2 pin plug hasn't come off the compressor ?

Also, try putting 12v across the compressor plug pins to see if the clutch engages.

Also, try turning the compressor by hand (engine off  ;)) to check that it isn't seized.

To check if there's any gas in the system then undo the cap for the low pressure valve (top of system) & use a guage. If you don't have a guage then you can push the ball in the valve down with a phillips etc to see how much gas pressure there is. If it's well charged then it should escape rapidly, so keep your head out of the way as it can blind you. If there is little or no hiss then the system is probably empty.

If the system is empty then there may be a leak, so look for any signs of oily green residue around the system, especially around the compressor body centre seal & compressor inlet/outlet pipe seals, as the refrigerant is dyed green for the purpose of spotting leaks.

Hope this helps  :)

I have a spare compressor from a 2.3 16v if you need one.
It was working OK before being removed from a car which was being broken up.

Hi i think the most likely reason your air con is not working is due to a shortage of gas in the system the low pressure switch cuts off the compressor to save damage to the system if you run the system with no gas the compressor is likely to overheat and seize up regards Malcolm
