Title: heating
Post by rich1 on Oct 29th, 2008, 11:04pm
i have a scorpio ultima cosworth (1996) the heating seems to take for ever to warm up (if at all) and when i switch heating/ac on i get a horrible rattling sound , other than that its the greatest car in the world ;D
thanks in advance , rich

The noise appears to be the fan motor. Have a look at THIS page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/fanrepair.htm). Remove the pollen filters. If they are dirty or wet they will prevent air passing in to the system and restrict air flow. Then look inside and try spraying the motor with WD 40. You may of course see/hear what is wrong once you have acess. The other thing is to check that there is no air in the system and of course the thermostat. The heater matrix could be blocked and sometimes 'back flushing' will solve that BUT after that things get really difficult!!. Welcome to the site and don't be afraid to keep asking, above all let us know how you get on.  ;)

thanks guys , to be honest im not sure whats rattling , you cant really hear it outside the car only inside , it sounds like something rubbing , and also in last couple of days ive noticed the steering is feeling heavy, could this all be related????

The only connection I can make between the two is a broken or slack drive belt but you'd have been overheating on a long run.

Is your power steering fluid at the correct level? they are prone to leaks especially around the bottom of the reservoir.

Tyres pressures ok?

Does your fan blower work? can you turn it to full speed?

If you check the two heater pipes that go through the bulkhead inside the engine bay they should both be hot after the engine has reached temperature. if one is cold you have a blocked matrix or airlock.

You may find they have been joined together to bypass a leaky matrix ;) (It happens)

Have you had heat in the past?

What is it you turn on exactly to hear the rattle? is it the blower or the A/C button?

Could the rattling/rubbing be coming from the drive belt tensioner ?......or maybe even the pulley bearings are on the way out on the P/S pump, compressor, water pump etc  :-/

Remove the drive belt & turn all the pulley wheels by hand. They should all turn quite easily & smoothly, any resistance/grinding felt then that could be the problem  :)

The lack off heat could well be a blocked or restricted heater matrix & the two problems may well be separate issues  :-/

Good luck  :)

if the drive belt was slack it wouldnt have been running the power steering pump so you would have had heavy steering ;)

my mechanic mentioned something about "tension belt" or something like that having siezed , he did explain but i cant remember what he said  ::) what does this mean?

Title: Re: heating
Post by Highlander on Oct 31st, 2008, 8:18pm
The tensioner pulley, its on a spring and pushes on the drivebelt to tighten it, if the spring breaks or the pulley siezes the belt may come off or break so all the ancilleries the belt runs will not be getting power, the alternator, power steering pump and water pump

rich.
Just as an aside,I am always boring people on here with registration number speak. Are you aware that your car has what was a Huntingdonshire number, later absorbed into Cambridgeshire. There are a great many Scorps with Hunts,Cambs and Peterborough numbers ie:- EW CE FL EG AV etc.I thought that the local Ford dealer had a field day at the time, but it seems there was a big holding compound beside the A1 somewhere near Buckden, where hundreds of Scorps awaited their fate, hence they were registered here, but most didn't start life here,in fact I have a FL 24v that started life with a leasing company in the North West, and spent it's life anywhere but Peterborough.
You can wake up now !
                     GOZZ.

well the bloke i bought it off lived near chelmsford. i think he bought it from a main dealer , he had it from brand new and looked after it so well (luckily for me) it is emaculate, and it would take a hell of a lot for me to get rid of it now , i love it to bits . it is by far the most comfortable car ive driven (my previous car was a range rover vouge and a vauxhall omega 2.5 td estate)

Title: 98 cosworth estate seat drop
Post by BobN on Nov 7th, 2008, 6:06pm
Hallo everybody
this must be the most stupid question but I am unable to make flat space in my scorpio.

can anyone help please

hi there

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/handbook076.gif

if you look at the diagram, you'll see that on the estate the 'flat' area isn't flat. only the saloon raises the seat base.

BTW, please start a new topic if you're posting a new problem/issue.
