Title: Cosworth 2.9 L 24 v, overheating issue
Post by cobbler on Oct 31st, 2008, 11:02am
Hi Guys,

Help please. Last night returning home, my temp gauge started behaving irratic and left me stranded till the engine cooled down just enough to get home.

1 st : Noticed fans comming on sooner than normal 2 wks ago
2 nd : Gauge flactuated from mid to top, ( not red  ), to mid again. Continued like this every minute or so. Checked  coolant tank and was boiling.
3 rd : At stop sign I heared engine knocking and stopped  for one hour to allow engine to cool.
4 th : Added 1L engine oil and topped up water.
5 th : engine knock serious and had to stop  another hour  before arriving home.

I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction, I assume it has to do with the thermostat and hopefully can just trash the thermostat and have a free flow system or is this too old school.  i hope it is possible to salvage the car, as I really like it, if not sad to say time to put it out to pasture in Ford Heaven.

Kind Regards

Hello and Welcome :)

Sounds pretty bad if the engine is knocking  :-/

I've got to ask... is it a Granada or a Scorpio?

Did it lose a litre of oil and you topped it up again?
Is it losing water?
Have you checked the oil and water for traces of each other?
Does the knock come back when you start up?
Check the water pump and belt tensioner, it may just be one of those thats gone
If its a Scorpio 24v you cant remove the thermostat, well you could remove the internals but you'd be better replacing it.
