Title: Wont start No power?
Post by Steve_S on Nov 5th, 2008, 1:25pm
Yesterday it was fine, no spinning dials or anythiing today turned key, dash is dead, not even a battery light... dials are dead, starter clicks and attemps to turn as if battery is flat, however battery volts are 12.7v the lights work and look bright. One hour on charge and still no change.... any ideas please

Steve

hi there

sounds like your battery has died. they can do that; i've had it happen to myself.

that being said, you should get the flicking dials, etc.

have you checked the condition of both fuseboxes? might be a bit of dampness in there.

Thanks, the dials dont move at all nor does anything on the dash work yet there seems enough power for lights etc, would have thought atleast the dash instruments would work... fuse boxes are fine, no moisture at all

hi there

while in the fuse boxes, did you check ALL fuses? too many things are cross protected on the scorpio.

The fuses look ok, cant see anything blowen.....i think the batterys fine, 12.7v.... With ignition on I can flash the headlights but the blue dash light does not operate nor does anything else...If there's enough juice  to operate headlights etc then surely it should light up the dash. Charging the battery seems to have made no difference.

Dissconected battery 10 mins and re-connected, no differance. battery tester show battery condition as OK

hi there

you say the fuses look OK? did you take them out one by one?

the more i think about it, the more i'm convinced it's a fuse issue, but try this...

switch radio on, turn ignition on. turn off ignition, then back on. does the radio work correctly? on then off, etc?

might be the ignition switch. :-/

yes the radio works fine, tried that, i didnt take the fuses out, but all looked ok but i will double check and take them all out to make sure. called out National breakdown, hopefull they can  find the problem.

Had you had the large connector to the drivers side fusebox off BEFORE the problem?. If so it may not be correctly fitted. Even Breakdown staff have been known to replace it incorrectly. The plastic 'pins' MUST locate in the lugs on the side of the unit BEFORE it is pushed home or it will go down but one row of contact pins out with all sorts of weird results. ;)

Nope, now work or anything has been done prior to it going wrong,

Think the ignition switch is working as I can hear the fuel pump click when switching on.

If the loom is disconnected from the rear of the instrument cluster then the car wont start as you describe.

I'd go for Andrews fuse theory whichever one covers the instrument panel

Thanks guys, all fuses checked and OK, chap from the recovery recons its  a problem with the imobliser..... However i have been having problems with the battery light staying on for a while now though its a new alternator and charging fine, also the airbag light has been flickering so it may well be a wiring problem behind the dash. car is now in the local garage. I do hope its something simple....will ask them to check the dash wiring.

Thanks

Steve

I've also seen the gearbox/engine loom do this if its damaged or gets wet

looks like the car is dead !!!!! Garage has got it running but still no instrumentation. They think it could be down to a wiring fault and may have blowen an ECU module  though they cant trace the actual falt.

May well scrap the car which is a real shame as it ran perfectly up til last week and has a gas conversion and 4 brand new tyres.... oh well all good things come to an end...

If you were a bit closer i'd have it off you ;)

Dont give up yet, i bet its not much, was it a Ford garage that checked it? they should be able to trace the fault

did they tell you what they did to get it started? I'll bet they bypassed start inhibitor relay meaning its a gearbox/engine loom fault.. might be worth finding out

Yes i think they bypassed someplace then had problems with wipers staying on , windows not working and headlights not turning off..... picking the car up on monday so will find out more then.

They did I think find some moisture in the drivers side fuse box but it looked dry to me befor it went in.
Was a local garage not fords.

Worth changing the fusebox then, sounds like that may be your problem, if you can pick up a good second hand one its not too big a job

Had the fuse boxes open and drying out for 4 days with no differance.... The garage believs its a major wiring problem someplace which may have damaged the ECU but were unable to trace it without costing a lot of money.

Even though the car was running fantasticly well til it died its not worth spending bags of loot on so I have decided its time to say goodbye.

Is there much call for spares? as I was thinking of breaking her up, machanics are A1 aand she has 4 new tyres and a gas system which I was thinking of removing and putting in my Mondeo 2.5

Thanks for all the advice and help

Steve
