Title: MOT / Bit 'o welding needed :-(
Post by Scorpio_Mike on Nov 17th, 2008, 12:16pm
MOT due early December so I thought I'd get it done nice & early rather than the usual 'day before' which always seems to happen to me.

Everything OK - apart from a patch of rust in the chassis rail on the passenger side, just above the rear suspension arm  :'(

I left it at the garage to fix, probably going to be about £250 - £300

MOT guy let me have a good look underneath while it was over the pit - rest of it in remarkably good order  :)

Rusty patch looks to be a double layer of steel, guess some moisture got in between the 2 pieces and did the dirty work...

Will update later.

Is the rust on the N/S chassis rail just behind the isolator bush ?......both mine & the wifes Scorps have it hear as well.

As long as it hasn't gone all the way through then I don't think it will fail the MOT.....well ours haven't...yet.

Lets us know how much it costs as I was going to have a crack at welding it myself, but it just looks like too much grief  ::)

if one skin has rotted away it should fail as it is 'substancially weakned'

Bit futher back JC, just before it starts to curve up into the rear arch.

Hole about the size of a £2 coin - think this seems to be a common problem area.

Good luck with it Mike.I wondered if you and JC had seen THIS article (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cracks.htm) as it may be relevant . ;)

Seen that article before - and while I was in the pit with the MOT guy we both had a good look ariund under the rear suspension but no signs of cracking - hopefully he would already have noticed had there been any  :o

The rusty part on my chassis rail is about 10 inches / 25cm towards the rear of the main bolt which holds the rear suspension crossmember to the floorpan.

Simmo - Didn't you have to have some welding done recently in the same area ?

I've welded two estates with this, it looks as though the chassis actually flexes at this point and slowly weakens the metal if you see a really bad one the metal surrounding the corrosion looks lighter in colour, similar to bending a piece of metal back and forwards until it heats up and snaps

Caramba :o

£250-300   for  a  bit   o'  welding  !!    :o

I suppose  the expense   entails a  fair  bit  of  dismantling  to  get  access  to the  mouldy   bit  ?

oh how i hate having an industrial unit, 200A mig welder, two post ramp......  ;D

I've carried out welding jobs that would have cost literally thousands if done by a pro restorer, but its yielded some lovely vehicles at excellent prices ;)

Latest aquasition is a 96 Torneo Minibus with bad rear tinworm for..... £0.00 :D
