my 1998 Scorpio estate has a rusty rear x member where the tow bar fits by the rear end of the bumper, anyone else had the same and a suitable remedy cheers barry

I had the same problem with my saloon, panels are still available from Ford, not too expensive either, cross member was about £35, and you will probably need the outer panel too, about £30 if I remember right. My local Ford parts dept ordered them for me, they came from Germany as none in stock in U.K. But arrived within 5 days. Hope that helps. Bikerdon.

Jf you have a ramp or pit and the right gear then its within the scope of a competent home welder, I actually gave my car and the panels to my local coachworks to do as I didnt have the free time, they completely removed the old rusty panels by drilling out the spot welds, its welded onto the lower rear wing sections too. wasn't cheap to have done but they did a superb job, seams all properly sealed and everything undersealed too. I dare say you could do it yourself but if you do, take your time and make sure everything is aligned before welding it up. Bikerdon.

Rear panels behind the bumper on the estate look the same as on the earlier Granada Scorpio estate - I fitted a towbar to my 1996 Scorpio and removed - at the dealers request - the towbar from the 1993 Granada Scorpio estate which I was trading in.
After removing the rear bumper from the Granny, I was quite shocked at the amount of rust there ! Literally crumbling away :o
Thankfully the Scorpio rear panels proved to be all sound when I fitted a towbar.
Surprised your 1998 model has rusted so badly.
