Hi to everyone,
I'm new and coming from the northern part of Germany and my age is 61. I found out, that I could receive better informations in this forum and so I will find it out.

My Scorpio II station 2,0 16V is one of the end of 1994 I bought it as a "patchwork car" with a wrecked engine only because my Irish wolfhound didn't like it to drive in my Mustang convertible.

The car wrked fine for 3 years untill someone tried to park his car in my luggage compartment. I've got a new one, a '97 Ghia (is it "Executive" in GB?) with a 2,3 16V engine for 1150,00 € with 98.000 miles.

As the automatic transmission of my wrecked 2,0 is in very good condition an that of my new one only "medium", I have to plan the future. My question: is it possible to replace th A4LDE transmission of my 2,3 by that of my 2,0? I asked the manufacturer (GETRAG) and some mechanics, but they all didn't know. So I hope, you will.

Other problems with the new one: the heating of the driver's seat is with no function, but I can replace it by one of my old car. And there is a noise telling me that the middle bearing of the drive-train has reached the end of its life (if it is not a problem coming from the tyres.

And: the ABS-lamp is on, tells me, that there is a problem with the ABS-pump which means one of three reasons:
- ABS pump
- ABS sensor(s)
- problems with electrical contacts anywhere.

I would be pleased if I would get an answer. By the way: excuse my bad english, my school-time ended round about 40 years ago.

Hi,

Welcome :)

The transmissions should be interchageable as long as the bellhousing pattern is the same, (perhaps someone more knowledgeable on the 4 cyl engines can advise as I can't remember). They are both 4R 44 E transmissions which means all wiring etc is identical but you will need to keep the 2.3 speed sensor with the car as the differential ratios are diffrent ;)

ABS Fault, get it scanned first before changing anything, takes the guesswork away.

As for heated seats, If the green LED's on the switches are lighting up then it is most likely as you say, a heater pad fault.

Is the early one the same shape as the later one . The Ford Granada was called the " Scorpio " in europe and the granada had the ALDe box while the later models had the ALDE box which was fully electronic.

If they ARE different cars then the gear boxes are NOT interchangeable without some modifications as the early one is NOT fully electronic This THIS PAGE (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/autotrans.htm) may help explain the difference (s) But dave 2302 is a GEAR BOX specialist and most likely knows more than me about this .

The ABS light can be down to number of causes people will be along shortly to tell you how to check but its all on the main site if you look for it . use the index page .

Your ENGLISH is much much better than my German last time I was over there i was 16 years old .

Engine to gearbox stud patterns are identical across all ford four cylinder engines, and all ford 6 cylinder engines, but not between the two (in other words, a v6 box wont fit to a 4 pot and vice versa)

As stated by Snoopy tho, the early/late in line 4 (and 2.9 12v and the 24v cossie) auto box arent interchangable

Good news if you feel the need to fit a 1600 pinto into your 2300 ultima tho ;D

Aha, Maybe I need new glasses }{

I read it that both cars were Scorpios, if he's referring to an old 2.0 twin cam Granada then the boxes ARENT Interchangeable as the Granada box, like the 12v box only has 2 solenoids for electronic control in 4th gear and converter lock only !! Therefore the wiring / electronics on the car will b different :(

FWIW the early 12v and one or two early cossies had the 2 solenoid boxes, (i'm referring to Scorpio here not Granada), so theoretically they would interchange although the cossie units were stronger internally, bearings / clutches.

The easy check for interchangeability is the solenoid plug on the top of the pan rail, behind bellhousing N/S, if this is the same and the bellhousing is same they will interchange. ;) As far as torque ratings go the lower torque boxes don't last quite as long but will get you going for a fair few thousand miles, and even with a second hand box from an identical model it's a lottery how long they will last ;).

Dont worry if the tailhousing has the VSS hole in the wrong place as these can be easily swapped from box to box just watch the park lock, can be slightly fiddly to get it all back together right and when you remove the housing the spring usually goes boing wheee ;D

Hi, thanks a lot for these informations. It's correct, both cars are Scorpio II, built end of '94 (early Scorpio II) an '97, equipped with the A4LDE transmission.
This weekend I will change the driver's seat, renew the brake disks and the pads and will have an eye on the electrical contacts of the ABS equipment. Thereafter I have to change the radio. The original 6000 CD will be replaced by a VDO Dayton 4150 navigation after having bought an adapter and some bulbs have to be replaced at the a/c control panel and the instrument panel. I think, after this I can replace the heater blower by another one because it makes some tweeting noises from time to time. But might be some WD40 will help 'til the sun comes back again.

Hi there,
now the second stage. The driver's seat is changed with little problems because the seat-belt pullers (don't know the correct term) ist pyrotechnical at the 94er and related to the ABS-system electronical at the 97er. But no sweat, problems are solved. Fine thing, driving with a heated **** in cold times. By the way, the crash deformed the seat a little bit.

Last weekend I bought some new winter tires, Hankook, running fine with not so much loss of money.

Reconnecting the battery after work showed the ABS-light again, so I will change the ABS-pump next wekend and will see, what happens.

Next, but not so severe (I hope) problem are vibrations between 45 an 65 Mph, not related to shifted gear or motor-rpm. It's more when the car is cold and less, when the car has run more than 8 Miles. I can feel it touching the middle of the car behind theh seats and nearly can't find them touching the middle of the car in front of the seats. It seems to be a problem with the middle bearing of the drive-shaft, right? Will that ruin my day?

Could be the centre bearing yes.

Possibly the rubber on the rear diff mount?

CV joints?

Has the prop shaft been removed recently? I'm assuming yes if you've changed boxes. the bolts may have been put back wrong.

Universal joints possibly but I'd bet on the prop to diff bolts..

Hi, as far as I know, no work at the diff or the drive-shaft. Guess it's the middle bearing.

Could it be flat spots on the tyres caused by cold standing ? then when they warm up it decreases.

Yep, sounds like the centre bearing, I thought you had swapped autoboxes but you havent got that far yet? ;)

Not yet, it`s too cold. I'm changing little things like bulbs and radio etc. in these days. Other things will happen when I've found a warm and dry place for that.

Never ending story? After having changed the batteries in the transmitter (you know: open and close the doors), the driver's window doesn't operate as before. The "re-learning-operation made no change. Before that I tipped on the switch and the window went down. I tipped on the switch and the window went up. Now: down as before but tipping on the switch the window doesn't move up in one way. How to re-learn that ***** thing?

;D gremlins everywhwere. Today' s start: no chance. key-system parts all around worn. Close. yes. open? no.No chance with brake-cleaner an dwd40.

Solution: making somme small holes into the transponder housing, just fitting to the vicinity of + and - pole, putting little metal things into the holes, connecting the cables to + and - pole of an additional battery, walking outside loaded with 2000 years of technical expirience, bombing that ridiculous self-moving system (scorpio 2,3L16V GHIA estate) with all that outflow of human intelligence - and it said: SIre, would you please enter that car , taking place and feel yourself at home? I did. Feeeling like Michelangelo, Marie Curie, Nobel, Lindbergh and Mighty Mouse in one person. My car. And I opened it.
