Title: Battery warning light Post by hopper on Dec 24th, 2008, 9:02pm Hi Again, The battery warning light comes on intermittently, I've used the diagnostic test from the dashboard and notice the alternator is charging at 13.6-13.8volts when driving but when the heated screens are switched on the voltage drops to 12.1-12.2volts. I presume it is the alternator that needs replacing as no matter what is switched on the car should register over 14.4v at all times. Regards Chris |

Title: Re: Battery warning light Post by pinto on Dec 25th, 2008, 3:03pm Sounds like the alternator is not long for this world, but theres a possibilty that it could just be a failing rectifier pack (the little black box on the plug end) These used to be fairly easily available from LSUK, but since they went bust, electrical suppliers are harder and harder to find - probably best off sourcing a s/h alternator from a scrappy or parts wanted on this forum |

Title: Re: Battery warning light Post by hopper on Dec 25th, 2008, 6:44pm Hi Pinto, I've sourced a recently reconditioned alternator only 3 months since recon £40 instead of £87 full price. Once received and fitted i'll confirm if this rectified the fault. Regards Chris |

Title: Re: Battery warning light Post by matt1987 on Dec 26th, 2008, 12:27am the battery light comes on due to a incorrect charge or malfunctioning part, the part in question is the diode pack , a diode pack only allows a dc charge to exit and no charge can go back through. it is a one way system. this will bring the light on indicating a fault to the driver like a engine management light. ;D |

Title: Re: Battery warning light Post by matt1987 on Dec 26th, 2008, 11:18pm got it in one snoopy when the battery light comes on it seems to be at fault with the alternator best bet and cheapest is to get another one. rather than messing about with them u can get repair kits seen them on ebay but it just aint worth it unless you can strip it down pretty quick and rebuild it with all the parts. with my experiences at work it is best to replace rather than repair. |
