Title: 2.9 12v Autobox won't slip
Post by Bargedriver on Dec 27th, 2008, 9:31pm
Evening all. I was hoping not to make my first post a plea for help but that seems to be the way of things!

I have a 1995, 2.9 12v Ultima estate automatic and it's been great for about a year. On the trip home from work on Friday it behaved normally until I slowed for a roundabout when the revs continued to drop through idle until the engine stalled.

It now runs normally in Park or Neutral but as soon as any gear is selected it's fully engaged and the engine stalls. You can get it moving by holding the revs very high and slamming the selector through to 1st for a Dukes of Hazard start, then once it's moving all gearchanges are smooth until you slow to a stop.

I'd like to know what's wrong but more importantly I'd like the name of a reliable and fair repairer in the Aylesbury/ Oxford area. I don't have the time or space to do it myself.

Thanks for looking, hope your Christmas was better than mine! Ho ho ho.

Sounds like the Torque convertor, gearbox oil ok?

Could also be the IACV (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/iacvdata.htm) . That can cause very similar problems on the 12v .. Worth taking it off and giving it a clean and oiling .

Highlander, thanks. Oil level is ok, colour is very pale brown with no sign of particles in it. to be honest, it's been like that since I bought it. I was thinking torque converter, is it possible for it to lock up? I've heard of TC Lockup clutches.

Snoopy, thank you too. Definately feels mechanical though. Just had a look at the link to the IACV, it's talking about EECV systems. I think my car is EEC 4.

I think Snoopy might know  ;)

A quote from this link:
http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/pooridle.htm

"Because engine control is holistic, the chances of an EEC-V controlled idle being effected by a dirty IACV is probably 10 or 15 to 1. It is always worthwhile cleaning it on the EEC-IV 12v engine variant where this was quite common, but much less so on the newer engines.  Experience shows that a failed IACV normally causes stalling rather than a poor idle."

Bargedriver.
Just in case you are unaware of the IACV position on the 12v,it is at the front of the engine on the plenum chamber. As Tompion says, the malfunction of the valve particularly on the 12v would be more likely to affect slow running.

Afternoon chaps. Thanks for the interest.

Tompion, I agree, Snoopy probably does know! I wouldn't doubt it for a second since he's " Xtremely BAD tempered and easily upset "  ;D .

NiceMan and Gozz, good to hear from you, and thanks for the pointer to the IACV location.

Will get back on when it's cleaned and lubed. Bye for now

Also check the wiring and plug to the IACV.

Bad news for me, could be good for you.

Due to work commitments and lack of space, the barge has to go. Tried to start it tonight but it now won't start and there's a puddle of something under it.  :(

I need it to go quickly, so if anyone wants it let me know sharpish. It's a green 2.9 12v Auto Estate, good tyres and interior. Undiagnosed engine and gearbox problems.

Located near Aylesbury, No MOT, undriveable. If you want it just make a donation to the forum and have it.
