Title: ABS probs
Post by proberjohn on Jan 16th, 2009, 6:26pm
Had no probs with the car but left it for garage to pick up for MOT.  Garage failed it as ABS Fault light on all the time (it hadn't been before).  They tracked fault to rear sensor and changed it.  ABS Fault light went away BUT ABS now operating when braking and slowing down - it comes in at 10mph and goes out below 5ish.  Still brakes but can be heard and felt through the pedal.

No alarm light although the ABS and TCS lights did come on this pm and would not reset after ignition off/on but did reset after 100yds moving.  Now back to no fault lights but ABS triggering at 10mph on braking again.

Garage suspects a toothed ring proble - I'm not so sure.

Anyone else had this??

Surely this would mean a faulty control module ? Id get an odb scan done just to be sure.

When it happened on mine it was due to to big an air gap between a rear sensor & sensor ring.
This had been caused by a failed rear wheel bearing allowing the sensor ring to wear away the sensor.
If you have the old sensor check that the face is flat, not concave.
Get them to check the new sensor hasn’t been rubbing (possibly indicating a wheel bearing).
So yes dodgy sensor ring is possible, as is a wheel bearing (notoriously difficult to detect play in the rear bearing).

Thanks Guys

The garage is going to look at it again,

They have a mechanical workshop and an electrical workshop.  The mech workshop failed the MOT and took it to the elect workshop (8 miles away).  They replaced the sensor and it was only when the mech guy drove it back to the mech workshop that they found the problem.  So another scan may pin something down and they can look at the sensor again.
